The movie alternated back and forth from a snail's pace (talks between family members about something deep) to breakneck speed (races).

The look of the movie looked very oriented to kids (bright, neon, primary colours), but had elements that shouldn't be in a kids' movie (a death in the family; a convoluted plot about, of all things, stock market manipulation ( Exclamation Question ), etc.).

I think the cardinal sin is the fact that the racing scenes don't work. Even for a cartoon, the action is unrealistic (cars spinning like tops without ever spinning out of control, etc. Iron Man tried to tackle flight realistically.). The race scenes are too fast to know what's happening. You can't worry about or cheer for Speed Racer if you have no idea if he's winning or losing. Add to that the fact that you keep cutting from race scenes to the faces of people cheering hysterically, and back again, again and again.

So, a thumbs down from me.

How about you?

Yes, that's exactly it. Even in a fantasy movie you want to feel like you're in some kind of control. Speed Racer is a Monty Haul-type movie.

I was told by a Korean student that it was great. I asked what they liked about it. Their reply: Because RAIN was in it...

That's all it's going to take to make the box office here... horray for nationalism Crying or Very sad D-war Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Haven't seen, don't think I want to. It really didn't look all that great and if the movie's plot doesn't have some connection to reality (fore mentioned spinning tops etc) then it's really annoying for me to watch it.
