I can buy you not understanding Arabic; however, I'm surprised at your utter lack of comprehension of the written word in English.

The man didn't change his religion. He went from no religion to Christianity.

Obama was born a to a muslim father.

To the type of muslim that would kill somebody for apostasy, Obama was a born a muslim.

Obama is now a Christan.

"Whoever changes his religion, execute him!"

What we have is not my lack of English skills but your unwillingness to be real about a religion.

I'm sure that Hussein from Al-Dearborn won't think Obama an apostate. But enough of his peers will, and as such the NYT story is merely the first we will hear of this in the MSM, assuming he wins.

That was exactly my point. It won't be normal, sane muslims that target him. And it is those muslims (the normal ones) who would agree with you that you should not kill a guy for leaving a religion.

Where you are being a fool is in not understanding that the type of person who would kill for religion is very unlikely to have a peaceful, nuanced and liberal view of his religion.

What point? You didn't have a point. All you said was "it'll be interesting" which is what people say when they don't want to say what they're thinking. don't knock me cuz I have the audacity to evaluate the hyperbole of the new york times and make a point from it.

You are an idot, mises. The man is running for president in the US. Last I checked, the country is not awash with illiterates taught to despise anyone not brought up in one particular variety of Islam.

Dearest cali, I don't have an imaginary friend nor do I hold the belief that Missouri is religiously sacred ground. Glass houses, stones. I'm sure Mr.Smith would advise humility.

But to the substance, the OP was not about the United States and I clearly said that a dude from Dearborn would not be the trigger man. This because the US has what is likely the most sane muslim population on allah's green earth. Any potential fart that might want to take a shot would come from the "fairly progressive" cities of Saudi Arabia or maybe "civil" Pakistan.

dude, here's the point of the article that you obviously failed to grasp:

Many Obama supporters argue that his election alone will help the US image. Muslims will be like, wow, this guys rocks! It (and the developing world at large) will be impressed that the US can elect a minority. The NY Times op-ed is simply pointing out this is naive and the opposite might in fact occur: Obama might inflame Muslims even more due to his background.

In sum, the writer is saying keep your hopes in check Obama supporters; stay grounded in reality.

--------------

As mises has noted, the article has nothing to do with domestic politics. Not sure why you keep on focusing on it cali. I think we all agree that Obama is not in danger from Muslims here in the United States.

The author does not take a stance on whether the US should or should not care about world opinion either.

His father was Muslim, so therefore he was Muslim when he was born.

My mom was a Catholic when I was born, so does that mean I'm Catholic?

Sorry I just don't buy that.

The flip side to this (and probably the reason why a lot of people will feel threatened as per the article) is that it'll also foster the thought in a lot of people's heads (that I doubt will be said out loud at all) that hm, if I convert from Islam and move to the US then my son could be president too...

If Muslims in the Arab world are offended by Barack Obama, wait till they meet John McCain, or more specifically, his spiritual adviser, Rev. Parsley.

OK, Islamic world, do you want someone in the White House who had a father who was a Muslim, or do you want someone in the White House being advised by the Christian Taliban?
Your choice...

In the meantime, it seems some people, such as West Virginian voters, haven't done the mental math about Obama's religion. Some of them, like this lady, still think Sen. Obama is a Muslim, like Transformers, robots in disguise.

KATE SNOW: Janis said she can't support Obama.

JANIS: He's Muslim and that has a lot to do with it. I just, you know, I just would rather have Hillary.

SNOW: Just for the record he constantly says he's a Christian -

JANIS: I know he does.

SNOW: You don't believe him?

JANIS: No.
