Use this argument with Koreans. They understand it.
Korea is growing richer, but its land is limited. Being richer, it demands more beef. The price therefore goes up. But, like people all over the world, they want fast, cheap meat, which their land cannot support. Hence, their demand for fast and cheap meat is the root of their problem.
The reason there is Mad-Cow Disease in the first place is the mad-demand for fast and cheap meat.
Solution, stick to and promote a more traditional Korean diet. That diet included beef, but as a special meal.
Many informed Americans also do not want American Beef exported. It is destroying our land, lakes, rivers, aquafirs, top-soil, forests, etc. It is consuming our national resources, including a massive portion of our oil (the price for a gallon of gas is...?).
In addition, cows eat grain. People eat grain. When cows eat grain, the price of grain goes up. Poor countries riot in the streets over the price of food. "Developed" countries complain about the quality of beef. . .
But, who is forwarding this argument? Not the buisnessmen. . . |

Very well put Omkara. I agree 100%. The modern world eats too much meat. I actually getting a bit sick of Korean bbq.
Even 'clean green' New Zealand, where our cows still live in fields with real grass and white fluffy clouds, is buggering its environment with too much beef and dairy farming. |

I agree. . .beef tastes good. Very good. But, I very rarely eat it. I have about three servings a year. I do, however, eat more than my share of fish. . . which brings us to several other issues. . .including Dok-do . . .
First, it's better to eat it only rarely; second, the problems which the industry presents makes me feel sick at the sight of a nealtly wrapped cut. . .
Still, though beef tastes so good, there are other things which are delicious. Looking for other meals to shift the balance from a meat-dominated diet to a vegetable-dominated diet is actually quite pleasurable.
Still, so long as people mis-frame the issue and argue over meat quality, the issue will only get worse. . .much worse.
Isn't McDonalds buying land in South America? Either way, why are we arguing over meat quality when we are falling so many rain-forest trees. . .is there no connecting the dots?
No matter how delicious a steak is, a thinking man or woman who at the same time gives a shhhteak will look at the side of the argument which is not driven by the root of consumer economics: the stomach. |

The roots of the beef issue stem from two things: the fears of Korean farmers and the gullibility of the Korean people.
The farmers are afraid that the Korean people will realize the stupidity of paying $8.00/pound for ground beef and stop paying that premium price for the inferior Korean beef. Therefore, they are more than willing to create and spread false information about American beef.
The Korean public is gullible enough that they believe every single thing they are told by anyone. Seriously... American beef makes your skin oily? Koreans are more susceptible to vCJD? If someone on television said that American cows were raised on cyanide and arsenic, the Korean people would believe it. |

Not to go off-topic, but this is incorrect on many levels.
A) McDonald's does not own land in South America except for land that has a restaurant on it.
B) McDonald's does not import beef from South America.

Yeppers. American beef is merely the latest in a line of foreign casualties due to rumors: Wal-Mart, Carrefour, etc.

Well, I wouldn't say that Korean beef is inferior. It's quite good actually. And not all Koreans are freaking out. I asked my students about it and the majority think it's been overblown. |

The majority of my students are not nearly as hostile as the posts on this site led me to believe they were. I have some essays my students wrote about it and if I have time tonight/tomorrow, I'll copy and post them.
The only place I know that gets as hysterical as the Korean media is here at Dave's. |

I suppose this depends on with who and on how you address the issue. Be open to their point of view and don't assume they are stupid. I've had very good luck talking to them about the issue. But then, I've framed the argument as I did in the original post. |

THere are a few things wrong with a couple of the OPs posts. the increases in grain prices has more to do with corn being used a biofuel. the demand for corn has raised the price of grain which also raised the price of beef.
Also eating fish is really bad for the environment. Over fishing is destroying the oceans. At the current rate of fishing the most fish will be gone from the ocean in 40 or 50 years. blue fin tuna is already endangered in many parts of the world.
I believe the real issue is anti-americanism. a small number of individuals of hi-jacked the debate and the opposition parties are riding it for all its worth in order to bolster their support. |

Yes, a meal with beef or some other kind of meat is good for us in many ways.
Spliff: Do you have an extra J-Bar you do not need? If so, I'd buy it from you for Bullwinkle: He's got severe anxiety, and a Canadian tourist told me on I'taewon's Hooker Hill about what a wonderful job an M.J. Missile could do on poor, poor, Bullwinkle.
P.M. me about whatever our good, ol' sort B.W. stands to get from the likes of such a dirty and disgusting Caucasian as yourself.
