|
|
Hello all.
Have any of you come across a situation where a GEPIK contract was changed from being hired under the GEPIK program to being hired under the school and principle?
It is a public school and the contract originally stated it was under GEPIK.
But I received an email from the agent saying that the contract was changed, being under the school and principle while GEPIK is no longer in the contract?
HUH?

You need to see the new contract and compare it to the GEPIK contract. Zero in on work hours, number of classes, vacation, overtime, etc.
Be sure it hasn't turned into an afterschool program; unless that is what you want.
Be leery and go over the contract with a fine-tooth comb. Could be another bait and switch. If so, please post the recruiter so others will be aware of the scam. |

Yes, I know that comparing each contract and looking at all the details is important.
In regards to that, they are. There are only two differences.
1. The employer is no longer GEPIK..it is the school itself.
2. They put in 200,000 won instead of 100,000 won for the rural
allowance.
I asked agent about this, and this was the response.

hi,
thank you for your email. I understand your confusion. this is what is going on.

The school has asked the Gyunggido Education district to supply a teacher several months ago and the school has not been able to get a teacher from the education district for several months due to its rural settings. So, they started looking for a teacher on their own. I did not know until yesterday they contacted us directly since almost all the public school jobs in Gyunggido province are of Education District jobs.
Anyway, the contract has exactly the same conditions and terms as the one of Education District (GEPIK) except for the employer's name.
hope that you understand that. |

mmm...I don't know about this. It does sound like a bait and switch tactic. Then again, it may be all good.
Anyone know about this or had a similar experience?

sounds normal to me. Tis true that some school do not receive a NT through the ministry even though they've requested one. There just isn't enough for everyone
Some schools (especially rural ones) have their own budget and can find their own teachers. I signed directly with a ps under the GEPIK umbrella. However, I signed a GEPIK contract not one that the school wrote. It did have the school's name on it.
I'm sure everything's the same. The 200,000 allowance seems nice though. I only get 100k |

My wife got hired directly by her public high school, whereas I'm in a Gepik school. The contrast is significant. Her school is very enthusiastic about having a native speaker, and has given her all sorts of facilities and assistance. Let's just say I don't get quite the same level of support at my school.
A school that is actively looking for a teacher is probably going to be interested in holding onto them. Could be a very good thing for you. Also, that 200,000 rural allowance is nice. |

| This is a really nice advantage for you. The school now will be able to negotiate directly with you for items that are important to you, whether that is vacation time or other items that will make your position more desirable. I am in the same situation and it has worked out great. |

You think it's good advice to tell newbies it's to their advantage to let the schools alter GEPIK contracts?
Playing with fire. |

LOL... doesn't every newbie know contracts in K-land are essentially meaningless? Unless, of course, the clause in question is to the K's advantage. |

Some are advising every GEPIK teacher to let their schools alter the contracts.
Bad advice. |
