Anyone know if you can verify the mileage of cars in Korea? At home I would take the serial number to the insurance company (we only have one gov run company) and do a check on the car to see if it had been in any accidents and what the last recorded mileage was. In Korea no one checks the odometer when you insure your car for the first time, but do they check it when you get a a regular safety check done? and can you find out when buying a used car? |

NOPE.
Consumer protection here amounts to caveat emptor. |

Buy new...problem solved & 100% under warranty for a few years.
Hard to beat that peace of mind.

It's not easy. I bought a car last month and was told it had done xxx kms.
The next day I realized the'mileometer' was stuck on xxx kms and wasn't working. |

I saw one being sold (a 99) with 0 km's on it....the idiot thought it would look better if he just rolled it all the way back. |

true, but I don't intend on staying too damn long and I hate the huge amount of depreciation on new cars.
My current ride, a 93 Kia Pride, cost less to buy than what most cars depreciate in one year. It has over 200,000 on it and clearly never rolled back. This time I'd like to buy a car in the low 100,000's but I'd like to know it actually is what I'm paying for, instead of another high mileage car with nice new paint. |

A friend used to work for a used car dealership in Korea and he advised me to check for scrape marks around the screws in the front panel (near the odometer). Apparently, in order to reset the odometer, they'd have to take the panel off. |
