This is an interesting article in the Korea Times now but what are your opinions? Do you think this could be successful as English Education in Korea is?

Civic Group Fights Against Illegal Teachers

By Kang Shin-who, Park Si-soo
Staff Reporters

A Civic group said that its actions to expel illegal English teachers will help upgrade the image of legal foreign educators.

The group, named ``Citizens' Association for Lawful English Education,'' has some 16,000 members on its Web site (cafe.naver.com/englishspectrum).

Pictures depicting foreign teachers holding a ``sexy costume party'' in 2005 were the key driver for the creation of the civic group.

``There are many illegal foreign teachers. We organized this group to help make our schools and hagwons free of these problematic teachers,'' said Lee Eun-ung, manager of the Internet cafe.

Most members of the group participate in online activities, and some also actively engage in off-line activities to help police find foreigners who engage in drug use. So far, they have played a role in nabbing more than 60 people in illegal drug-related cases.

``Sometimes we stay up at night tracking and watching foreign nationals. We have even found some foreign teachers that take drugs then teach students at hagwons the following day,'' Lee said. ``We will continue to help police deport these foreign teachers.''

The group members vary from university professors, physicians and teachers to office workers and even policemen.

It is now calling for the Korean immigration authorities to require visa applicants to submit to drug tests for marijuana.

``The Korean government suddenly removed medical checks for marijuana for E-2 visa applicants. We believe that leads to rises in illegal drug used by foreign teachers,'' Lee said.

``In the long run, we will convince the government to introduce regulations on deported foreigners to forfeit illegally earned money.''

Currently more than 27,000 foreign nationals are officially teaching English at schools and hagwons, according to the Korea Immigration Service. However, it is estimated that more than 50,000 foreigners including illegal residents are teaching English here.

The group also plans to work on improving the bad images of foreigners, tarnished by a few illegal foreign nationals.

Given that the government is planning to let in Indians and people with 2 year degrees/2 years of university and Korean-American/Canadians...pretty soon there aren't going to be any illegal teachers at all...or it's going to be impossible to tell who is and who isn't.

They can't even keep track of things now...what happens when the floodgates open? Rolling Eyes

Now that's a nice thing to ponder when we are going about our business...being stalked by Koreans with a hard-on for foreigners. It's not like there aren't plenty of things to be paranoid about already...

No, they didn't. They organized the group because they were disgusted with the dirty foreigners daring to sully "their" women.

aka illegally stalking foreigners for no other reason than they are foreigners. It's just as bad, if not worse, than the Daejeon HA's "we're watching you" campaign. Guilty until proven innocent. Walking while white, as it were.

Pfft. This is the same group that helped organize swarms of self-appointed protectors of Korean women's virtue, and encouraged the beatings of foreigners in Shinchon (if they dared to be walking with a Korean woman) after the whole EnglishSpectrum kerfuffle got their nationalistic racism up. Yes, how dare we date their women!

Help improve our bad image, indeed. They were leading the charge, tarnishing our image in the first place. Now they've changed their minds and we're okay? Pfft.

Can it be said that the more illogical reasoning is that
they are connecting illegal teachers with illegal drug use and costume parties?

How are these connected? I would think that teachers here who are illegal would want to stay under the radar as much as possible and avoid any illegal activities.

Illegal Teachers are a waste of skin, IMO. Not only should they be rounded up and deported, they should also be made to pay a hefty fine or face imprisonment.

Quite right. A recent graduate with a degree in blah-blah knows a shit ton more about teaching English than someone with no degree but 20 years experience.

I've go a mate who teaches illegally. He has been in Korea for about 15 years (I think). Anyway, a degree wasn't a necessity when he first came, and since he stayed at the same hagwon for that whole time, he had no problems. He was working legally. Then, his hagwon shut down. It didn't matter that he'd been here for so long. The rules had changed. Simple. In the same situation, I'd probably do the same.

I am going to have to play Devil's Advocate on this.....

But first, I personally agree that with the money and time spent on going to school far outweighs just going to Korea and picking up a job.....mostly because there is a certain limit a person has in their job prospects...also they miss out on....

- Being able to bank legally
- Being able to have health insurance
- Being able to collect pension after they finish their contract

.....these are simple things you simply can't do IF you come and teach without or with the wrong credentials.

With that being said......

The one thing I did notice about some (not many) who didn't have a degree is that they worked harder and were more creative in their teaching. They had to do that to avoid being detected. But they made themselves to be note-worthy teachers...

However, there were some that were simple dregs on society, no matter where they were in the world....

Also, many degree holding teachers I met were more caught up in bellowing in their education that many didn't even know how to teach and were ambivalent to the needs of the students

As for this civic group's crusade to protect Korean women's 'virtue'.....well, all I can say is that what foreigners are accused of is only a fraction of the crap they go through with Korean men.......Anyone who had lived in Korea for a long length of time will say that Korean pop culture is almost like what a person would find in Japan, China and even Taiwan and the same goes in regards to male attitudes toward women...There are countless news stories about rural men marrying SEA women and the media sometimes seems to embellish it. But when it comes to a foreign man dating or marrying a Korean women, the whole country seems to be up in arms....

It reminds me of a bit by Comedian George Carlin......
"Have you ever met those pro-lifers.......many of them are the kind of people you wouldn't want to fuck in the first place......."

Confused

I like this assumption the Civic Group places first, that foreigners are the only one in using illegal drugs. Wasn't there a Korean and some non teaching foreigner dealing in drugs and the English teachers were the one's that got caught? It was a recent headline about more English teachers being caught using drugs and the Korean/other foreign dealer got off scott free.

I feel that this group doesn't help anyone apart from the police. The police are the ones that are meant to investigate anyone who breaks the law but I hate the fact that this group follows anyone just because they are foreign and obviously guilty due to this fact.

I think we should visit the Naver blog and let him know a piece of our mind.

Some of their publicity posters are quite "amusing" --

(hey, I never knew Swiss James bartended that party!)

And here and here.

I found it is them (Naver English Spectrum Cafe) who masterminded the recent "double life" post on Daum.

Great. More punks and haters to worry about.
Whatever happened to "Stop Snitchin' Stop Lying"?

Alright, netidorks. You wanna follow me? Bring it! You can follow me around the city, and then to your apartment where I proceed to do any female in there above the chronological age of 18. You can either stand there and watch while I do things you can't believe or I can toss you into the bathroom with Larry Craig and the rest of the GOP. Your choice...

As for the rest of you, use the old tricks they taught us in school (the 4 corners trick, the random stop trick, the random store trick, and the ever popular walk 50% longer than necessary).

Wow this group has 16,000 members.
These illegal teachers have murdered how many Korean children? ZIP
They have sexually harrased how many Korean children? ZIP

Every year hundreds of Korean children are killed by KOREAN drivers who run red lights, speed, drive whilst drunk.
I had a student who lost her cousins when the family was all killed by a red light running driver.

Wonder how many civic groups there are that are trying to stamp out these child killers, wonder how many members such civic groups have.

Wonder how many civic groups are helping the North Korean women sold into sexual slavery in China. How many members do these civic groups have?

It's time for Min-suk and Min-su to be tucked into bed.

"Where's Mummy?" They cry.

Daddy replies, saying "She is doing important work."

Little do these small children know that their mother is indeed doing very important work and the country's livelihood, peace of mind and integrity is at stake. She, like 16,000 brave souls across Dae Han Min Guk, are doing the Lord's (or should I say, King Sejong's) work keeping track of the pesky, dirty, no-good foreigners who sully this fair land.

Min-suk and Min-su's mother is currently staking out a fat, unattractive, alcoholic western English teacher, who {gasp} is actually having a couple of beers over dinner with a Korean woman. Their mother has taken it upon herself to protect this lost soul who has succumbed to the foreigner's animal charms. Her job is ensure that this young woman does not go home with that beast of a man!

She and her comrades are true patriots, braving rain, sleet, snow and foreigner germs to ensure that this country's integrity is preserved.

Dangun must truly be proud.
