| No way man, I've been watching 'Home Alone' parts one two and three and 'Danger Room' starring Jodi Foster and now I have my mansion all rigged up. My stupid little Rube Goldberg contraptions will foil you all! |

I didnt think it was an odd hobby, but it's kind of an uncommon one in this crowd: backpacking
i dont mean prancing about europe or east asia, going from hostel to foreigner bar to hostel, with a daypack and a lonely planet definition of backpacking
i mean putting a tent, sleeping bag, food, and other necessities into a full-size backpack, carry your tp with you because there are no bathrooms OR outhouses in the backcountry and going off into the woods or mountains for weekend or a week or whatever and just get away from it all definition of backpacking
it's funny how you realize showers are over-rated after awhile, and how soft people are ("what you didnt take a shower!?? you have to have a shower") |

Organizing... then after pulling eveything out to organize I get bored and get on Daves and then it takes me 3-6 months to just throw everything back unorganized and extremely wrinkly.
I guess that isn't really a hobby. I am packing for Korea right now and it is not going so well. I hate packing!!! If I haven't worn it in a year or it doesn't fit get rid of it, right.... but its so hard, I might lose weight and then I'll need those clothes and then I'll be pissed I get rid of them. So confused!? |

| I play role playing games. Dungeons and Dragons, Conan, Slaine, etc.. Also into WW2 naval combat with scale models. Oh, and playing board games but not boring crap like Monopoly or such. I usually play games like "un-exploded cow", or Cut-throat Caverns. |

Do you collect and paint the lead figurines. I still have some Lord of the Rings collectors figures from 1978. They were based on the old animated
version. I also have some toy soldiers from the Battle of Waterloo. I like to set them up in squares. |

Oddly enough, I ride a unicycle too. Unfortunately, I don't ride that often at the moment, but maybe with the warmer weather...
Was ridiculously difficult to learn when I first got it (took about 6 weeks, if I recall). I didn't bring my unicycle to Korea when I came (many moons ago), but I bought one here on Dave's a couple of years ago. Less than 30 minutes after I got it, I was riding no problem again. Guess it's like they say....
It's just like riding a...errrr...unicycle
Along with the unicycle goes the juggling (don't do that much anymore either) and a bit of amateur magic (again, that's fallen by the wayside too). Maybe I should go dust some of that stuff off and give it a try again... |

Can you give me some tips for the best way to learn to juggle? Everything I've read or heard is conflicting.
One of the teachers I worked with at home could juggle & it had his students spellbound....he'd bribe them with the old "if you concentrate & get this test/worksheet/exercise done I'll juggle for you". It was like a little bit of classroom magic. I vowed then & there to learn.
So how, exactly, is the best way to start? |

stormy,
I teach one on one with various age students and occasionally I will teach a student how to juggle 3 tennis balls.
it takes 15 minutes to learn and it's not that hard to do if you follow the steps.
step 1: take one ball and toss high from hand to hand. back and forth, left to right and right to left,
after a few minutes step 2: 1 ball in each hand. throw the ball in each hand to the other hand at the same time without hitting each other.
step 3: hold 2 balls in one hand and throw them into the air one at a time and catch them. 1 hand throw throw, catch catch.
once you have gotten good at step 2 and step 3 then step 4:
do both at the same time,
label 3 balls 1, 2, 3. put ball 1 and ball 3 in one hand and ball 2 in the other. throw ball 1 to ball 2, ball 2 to ball 3 and ball 3 straight up and catch it.
now you're juggling. |

| stormy, I learned to juggle in high school, and we started with little scarves. because of the floatiness of them, they're a little more forgiving. |

Stormy,
Ed's right. Though juggling 'looks' hard, it's not. It's just a matter of learning what to do. Like Ed, I've taught several people to juggle in 1/2 an hour or less. After that, it's all about practice.
If you're willing to come to northern Seoul (Gireum), I'd be glad to give you a lesson. Though Ed's directions make sense, I find it's a LOT easier to learn from someone in person. Also, a teacher can spot your 'mistakes' and correct bad technique before it becomes a 'habit.'
Also, not sure if he still does it, but Ed was running a juggling club of sorts on Sundays, but I can't remember where. Not sure if he's still doing it.
Good luck! |

| I learned to juggle in less than ten minutes by using plastic grocery bags. Open them up and learn the motions with them (as they kinda float in the air) and then pick up some balls and try. |

Wow. Am I correct in thinking pretty much every poster on Dave's can juggle except for me?! |
