I'm with Hanguker. Just build an HTPC. There's a lot more you can do with it compared to these TVIX -style devices.

You don't need to spend a lot on an HTPC. 700-800,000 will get you smooth 1080p playback. I'll be building one in the Fall.

Thanks for the advice. Just now, I watch video files through my laptop computer with a cable that plugs straight into the PC. It works okay but I want something else with hard-drive space that I can dedicate entirely to video files. Just now, I keep having to delete stuff I've watched to clear space for more stuff. Ideally, I want to keep some of them to watch again.

Building a new computer just for that might be a bit out my price range, especially at the moment, but maybe later. It sounds like the best idea.

The Popcorn thing looks interesting but I might have to wait a bit for it to come down in price/demand. That's why I'm looking into the Tvix devices as a cheaper alternative, but I don't want to buy one if they're complete crap.

As for Mr. Pink's theory - I definitely fall into the mid-weight hobbiest sort. Not hardcore at all so don't need the big dog, I think.

Nice to find a TViX thread here. I have two 5100SH, one in Thailand (I forgot to bring it with me, anyway my g/f there won't let me take it) and another one here. After the last firmware upgrade, it plays pretty much everything I have with the exception of some rare formats (OGG video for example) and I have a few movies where the sound doesn't play.

Had some trouble with my 47LG60 until I found out that it will ONLY accept NTSC feed - how odd that the few additional bucks required for a PAL/NTSC switch were not spent in the domestic model, on second thought this is Korea, so what - so I had to set the TViX output to NTSC only, that fixed the problem for the 40% movies that wouldn't play.

Now looking for the 7000 model but it is unavailable at Technomart, in general I find it difficult to get high end DVICO hardware there. So I'd appreciate any hints or directions to places that sell these over the counter.

I also confirm the "problem" of having fast internet access in Korea and the resulting space problems: From February to May, I have collected close to 800 HD movies in 720p and 1080p, from the usual 5GB up to over 20GB in size (BBC Planet Eart 11 part series comes around 50GB at 1080p). Hence, in the same period, purchased 8 500GB and 3 750GB Seagate Freeagent USB drives. Now I wish I'd spent the money on a RAID5 configuration, because the TViX allows a maxiumum of 2 USB external HD connected to it only.

I remember in the past there were "printer switches" where a number of printers could be connected to the single parallel port of the computer. Now I wish there was something similar for USB!

In the end for the serious HD addict, the problem will always be one of physical space. 10+ HD drive, a RAID/NAS solution or HTPC will use up a lot of space (and power sockets) around your TV.

Not to mention the "when do I have time ro watch all this???" question

You can most likely buy the new 7000 series at Yongsan. I go to the older buildings and just ask around. You won't see it just sitting there, but typically the guys who have divx players and that sort of thing can get what you want. It's how I got my current TVIX box.

I will most likely go with a raid setup when I get back to Canada and just network it to the TVIX...I'll have to look up how to do that, but even with Canada's crappy internet, I should be able to get 100GB a month of content easy...I'd rather put that on HDs than burn discs.

If anyone has a suggestion for a good raid box that can easily be networked into a TVIX i'd appreciate it.

You beat me by a long shot on buying external HDs. I only bought 1.5TB of them. The only thing I am really grabbing is DVD5 and DVD9s, which I try to keep as .ISO as much as possible.
