I got a call from my uni telling me that immi called them, and that because my letter of release was dated 2/28, and my uni contract was dated 4/1, I was being fined for the 30 days in between (what's the going rate these days--100,000 per day?!?).
My visa wasn't cancelled and was originally good until 8/2008. I have already transferred and extended it and received the new writing on my ARC. What is my best course of action? Get the uni to make a new contract stating my start date as 3/1 (I started teaching 3/3) or get a new letter of release stating 3/30 as my final workday (they paid me through March as part of my being fired). |

If you are getting fined for the month you can expect to pay 100k won (TOTAL).
The fine is a minor inconvenience. The notation in your immigration file (and it is already there) is what will come back to haunt you later.
It means that you may have to have a consular interview in your home country for your next visa rather than just a visa run.

| Wow. That's a huge relief (regarding the money). I have a two-year contract with my current school and thus I won't be changing visas, but instead will be extending (again). Does this change my need to leave the country, or is the home-trip only applicable to a new visa and new school? Also, my current extension is good until August of 2009, but I'll be home in June and July for summer break...should I get my interview done then? Thanks in advance for your continued time and knowledge! |

Just a problem when you apply for a NEW visa or change employers
(unless they change the rules again).
Deal with immi ASAP so it doesn't get worse. |

I read in the Korea Times that those already in country and who've had previous work visas do not have to have to go to their nation for a consular interview. When did this change? |

This only applies if you have any type of record either with police or immigration, apparently. |

Final fine:
1mil to me
4mil to my uni
Uni is taking care of (at least the greater part of) it, as it was their mistake, and fortunately I got a quick phone call from my supervisor saying they were sorry for the hassle, and that I shouldn't worry about causing the higher ups to be upset with me, as I'm important to the department (it didn't hurt I'm in with the VP of the school--probably how I got my job in the first place).
Anyway, I'll be starting my daily trips to the admin department to ask for my renewal papers early next time around. Ugh. |

On a somewhat humorous note, the immi officer (who spoke amazing english) started our conversation by saying:
"Mr. Jackson, you are in biiiiiig trouble."
I haven't felt like a scolded child in a long time. |
