|
|
I'm looking into getting the HPV vaccine (Gardasil) before heading back to Seoul next week. I'm obviously over the ideal age for it (12-16), but anything that can prevent cervical cancer and genital warts seems like a good bet. I have the prescription and all, but it's a three shot series finishing 4 months from now and I'm not sure whether I should get it here or not. I know it's a long shot, but has anyone seen it in Korea? Beer on me in Seoul if you can find out.
Also, it's kind of pricey ($400 or so), so it's probably worth it to get it in Canada anyway where at least something will be covered by insurance. I'm also nervous about taking it because I think it needs to be stored at a cool temperature. I took my last shot of Hep A/B on the plane in 2006 and didn't have any problems (security or otherwise), but I'm nervous about wrecking this vaccine because by the time I get back to Canada, I'll actually be too old to get revaccinated. |

kinda sorta off topic, but have you ever heard about guys getting vaccinated? i know the vaccine is designed for women as they have the most to lose from hpv, but still, i don't want to be a carrier...
as for taking it on the plane? i'm sure you could talk to the airline and see if they'd store it for you. i'm sure a nice flight attendant wouldn't mind throwing a tiny little vial in a fridge for a few hours |

It is available here and I think it would be cheaper than Canada, most meds are much cheaper here. I'll ask hubby if he can ask our OBGYN and let you know.
Also, while it hasn't been proven to be effective in men a lot of doctors are recommending it for men as well. A significant amount of throat cancer was found to be HPV related.

Thanks so much. Please PM me or reply if you find out anything more. In the meantime I'm going to look into how much (if any) is covered by my insurance here. |

It is not covered by insurance here. It costs 200,000won each shot, for a total of 3 shots. Sorry for the delayed reply! |

Ouch. I guess it's worth it though. I was able to get the first shot today (I leave tomorrow morning) and it's covered by insurance here, so I guess I'll shell out the $400 bucks and pick up the rest while I'm there. Thanks so much. PM me when I'm over a bit of jetlag if you want to claim your beer. I'll even spring for something other than cass-aaa. |

Of course you can take vaccines on the airplane. Haven't you ever seen 12 Monkeys? |

You can take vaccinations on airplanes. Last July when I came over I had two vials/needles worth of twin rix in a little cooler with me the whole time. |

If you ever have children, you may want to consider getting it for them!
