Jack Dee is good at pointing out the often ridiculous self-importance of the British.

It's strange I always have to find new humour.

When I was 11 it was Vic Reeves and Big Night Out. My first look at the bizarre.

By 18, it was Eddie Izzard and Ali G

By 20, it was Lee Evans and Phil Kay (saw him live, amazing energy).

By 24, Bill Bailey.

Now I'm a bit out of touch. I loved the Boosh about four years ago, now I think they're sh*t. Nothing's really caught me at the mo. I can't watch Izzard anymore, but I can watch all the rest and still find them funny. Bill Bailey still comes out with good stuff as does Lee Evans. I saw a guy called Daniel Kitson a couple of years ago, he had a bit part in Phoenix nights. Hilarious. My sides hurt after that.

Maybe now nothing seems new to me, maybe I'm just getting old.

These are live acts though, nothing will beat Chris Morris or Armando Ianucci for their comedy writing.

Writing or general comedy (non stand-up) Woody Allen, Larry David, Howard Stern (I mean to include everything in his show), P.T. Anderson (my favorite non-musical entertainer... at core of it is an amazing sense of humor; even though he's definitely not to be considered a comedian, he's made me laugh as much as anybody), The Simpsons (early-middle years), The Office (UK version)

Stand-up: Robert Schimmel (what a shame that none of you know this guy), Greg Giraldo, Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx, Jeff Ross, Dave Attell, Lisa Lampenelli, Robin Williams

I only read this thread up to the point where periwenkle mentioned Steven Wright. I have many favorites but he came to mind first.

some Steven Wright's one-liners:

I live on a one-way dead end street.

You know how when you put a stick in the water and it looks like it's bent, but it's really not? That's why I never bathe.

You know that feeling you get when you nearly fall backwards in a chair--then you catch yourself? I feel that way all the time.

I still like Sam Kinison among many that have already been mentioned.

So true.

Historically, comedy kind of builds off of what came previously.

I was very excited when I finally got a hold of some Lenny Bruce, but I really don't find it that funny. It probably was when it came out, but so many people have borrowed from him that it just seemed very stale to me. Just like it was incredibly daring for its time but pretty timid compared to modern comics.

Bill Hicks.

And I'm going to plug Al Murray just because no one else has mentioned him and he's brilliant.

Here's some Schimmel:

Starts out a little slow... give it a few minutes to get to the good stuff. The rest of it is on the same page.

Joining late, no time to read it all so I don't know if he's been mentioned but George Carlin is probably my favorite.
