Now, the thing that I am confused about is that I thought you are given a certain amount of leeway time to leave after your visa has expired, at least if you have an American passport.
One reason that I say this is that you can legally stay in Korea as a tourist for up to a month with no visa, at least if you are American.
Another reason that I say this is based on an experience that I went through when I changed jobs midway through a contract.
How long this leeway time is, is a bit unclear to me. At one point, I heard a week and at another point, I heard a month depending on whether I was talking to my old employer or at that time, a prospective employer.
However, I ended up not having to rely on some amount of leeway time. Fortunately, I was able to get my old employer to delay contacting the immigration office for a month while I was looking for another job.
Oh, and why did it take me a month to find a new job? I was determined to find a nice high paying teaching job that did not involve teaching English. |

| I was wrong in thinking the same thing about "extra time" after your ARC sojourn expires. You can, however apply with immigration prior to this expiration date by requesting a 30 day tourist visa, but you are NOT allowed to work under those circumstances. |

NOT TRUE - now now, not in times past and I don't expect it to happen any time in the near future. You are REQUIRED to extend your visa or leave no later than the date indicated on your ARC. Failure to do so will result in an overstay and the problems associated with it,

AND you can change your status and get an extension for up to 1 month for free when your visa is about to expire BUT you MUST APPLY for it. It is NOT automatic.

If you changed jobs you either got a new visa (good for 1 full year) or your visa was extended when you went to the new job (somebody applied for the extension based on the new contract) or your new job ended before your visa expired or you overstayed.

There IS NO LEEWAY ( http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/IMM80/index.do )

| As I said, I changed jobs midway through my contract which was well before the expiration date of my visa. However, based on my understanding, once your employer informs immigration that you are no working for him, your visa is no longer valid anyways. |
