McCain vows to withdraw most troops from Iraq by 2013

Here are his specific promises, punctuated by my opinions:

Quote:
If I am elected President, I will work with anyone who sincerely wants to get this country moving again.

You'll have to. The Democrats are going to increase their majority. But good foresight.

Quote:
I will listen to any idea that is offered in good faith and intended to help solve our problems, not make them worse.

He'll oppose the MoveOn wing of the Democratic party, but embrace the Blue Dog/DLC coalition.

Quote:
I will seek the counsel of members of Congress from both parties in forming government policy before I ask them to support it. I will ask Democrats to serve in my administration.

Token Democrats in the administration! Better than the token minorities Bush has put in his cabinet.

Quote:
My administration will set a new standard for transparency and accountability. I will hold weekly press conferences. I will regularly brief the American people on the progress our policies have made and the setbacks we have encountered.

Crap. And I thought Obama was going to be preachy.

Quote:
When we make errors, I will confess them readily, and explain what we intend to do to correct them.

McCain: I'm not Bush! I'm not Bush! I'm a maverick!

Quote:
I will ask Congress to grant me the privilege of coming before both houses to take questions, and address criticism, much the same as the Prime Minister of Great Britain appears regularly before the House of Commons.

[Dem attack ad]

John McCain: he wants to take this country back 250 years; to when the British Crown ruled America. Say no to tea taxes. Say no to Redcoats. Say no to John McCain in 2008.

[/end attack ad]

What makes you so certain that McCain offers this in bad faith? He has never struck me as an ideologue. Rather, I see him as a leader who is committed to practical politics, along Lieberman's bent. I think he is for real on this and that, moreover, this is not new in his thinking.

In any case, how do you know that McCain only intends to make token cabinet appointments with respect to including at least some Democrats in his administration?

Kuros:

Just kuroious: weren't you backing Hillary for the longest time?

Why is it that dyed-the-wool Dems call every minority appointee to the Cabinet of a Republican President a token gesture but when they do the same it's somehow honoring our national diversity?

Did Powell consider himself a token rep, or Rice? I think not.

As for McCain's latest pronouncements, Gopher is correct. You're conveniently overlooking the fact that it is precisely his moderate stance on divisive issues that has gotten under the skin of blowhards like Limbaugh.

Now Grampa McGrumpy is claiming that most troops will be out of Iraq by 2013? I wonder when he's going to promise the neocons he'll bomb Iran?

Seriously, we should be redoubling our effort in Afghanistan to get Bin Laden and snuff out Al qaeda. It's too bad we took our eye off the ball five years ago.

Grampa McGrumpy?

Nice...

Ageism apparently doesn't adhere to the leftist brain as toxic just yet.

Imagine someone posting...

Darkie Obamie....

can someone from the left explain the difference between Grampa and Darkie?

Why is one okay and not the other?

A slight difference would be that most of us will get to be McCain's age one day, so it's not like anyone's being singled out for oppression by a "Grampa" joke. The joke kind of implicitly makes fun of everyone.

I'm pushing 40, but if someone makes a wisecrack about some 1980s teen idol who's touring again even though he's now "a balding 40-year old", I don't get offended. I doubt there are too many 40 year olds who would.

It remains not only age discrimination but also using that age discrimination as a lever to ridicule and/or actually undermine a politician or a former teen-idols come-back tour.

In other words, an unworthy tactic, especially from the left, one of whose more nobler positions calls for tolerance and an end to discrimination of all types, across the board.

I also find the term 'Grampa' offensive. The poster used it in a demeaning, derogatory way. The 'McGrumpy' was cute, though.

Quote:

I'm not going to look it up, but I'm fairly sure I've heard this from every candidate in every campaign since I started paying attention in 1964. The 'anyone who...' part means anyone who agrees with 'me'.

Quote:
I will seek the counsel of members of Congress from both parties in forming government policy before I ask them to support it.

Most presidents do this--especially the successful ones. It isn't particularly revolutionary.

Quote:
I will hold weekly press conferences.

Similar promises have been made before. The promise is kept until a problem arises and there is criticism. Then the frequency of press conferences declines.

Quote:
I will ask Congress to grant me the privilege of coming before both houses to take questions, and address criticism, much the same as the Prime Minister of Great Britain appears regularly before the House of Commons.

It might not be too late for him to change his citizenship to a more appropriate country.

I actually admire that about the British system. The closest we have to it is the press conferences the President sometimes and, more regularly his press secretary, hold in the White House.

If McCain wins, I hope he follows through with this and sets a precedent for future American politics.

The problem is not that he's black, the real slur is the one being used by conservative to make people think he's Muslim. If you don't think there are chain emails going around claiming that is a Muslim, then you are in denial. I have no doubt a few people on this board believe that sort of thing.

Who is producing these alleged emails and how do you know? Can you produce one here?

Well, you can count me as one leftist who would regard that as a silly, as opposed to a noble, position, if it failed make any distinction between, on the one hand, calling someone a "nigger", and on the other, joking that Mick and Keith will probably be turning up in a Ben-Gay ad sometime soon.

As for who is behind these allegations, it looks like the GOP-Moonie axis might be up to their old tricks on this one...

Quote:
Debunked Insight Magazine and Fox News Smear Campaign

In the past week, many of you have read a now thoroughly-debunked story by Insight Magazine, owned by the Washington Times, which cites unnamed sources close to a political campaign that claim Senator Obama was enrolled for at least four years in an Indonesian Madrassa. The article says the sources believe the Madrassa was espousing Wahhabism, a form of radical Islam.

That will not fly. "Grampa McGrumpy" is not analogous to making jokes about Mick and Keith's hypothetically becoming spokesmen for Ben Gay. "Grampa McGrumpy" is part of the hypocritical left's mean-spirited attacks against McCain, not based on anything more than his age, in an effort to discredit him in the voters' eyes.

And I do not believe I will take the Obama campaign's word -- or any other campaign's word, for that matter -- at face-value on anything. Hard to make sense about what is really going on, what is really being said, and who, exactly is saying it, these days.
