I was told my a former coworker that if I don't stay a third year at my school, that they will owe me for 2 airfares back to my native country. She told me and the other teacher who re-signed for a second year a few months ago to be sure and get 2 airfares if we don't stay a thrid year. Is this true? Is a school supposed to give you 2 airfares back to your country? As in 1 for each year you stay? So, if I stay a third year, they will owe me 3 airfares? Well, if that is the case, my former school screwed me over concerning airline tickets. I stayed 2 years and they only paid my way back to the states at the end of my second year. They didn't pay me for 2 one-way airfares. |

They should pay for a RT ticket home or another country of your choice at the end of each annual contract with 2 extra weeks of paid vacation as is common in EPIK contracts. I assume it's a use or lose kind of deal. |

What does your contract say?
Even in a public school, in most cases, 'If you don't use it... you loose it.' I'd bet money your contract contains a provision to the effect it is not continuance of a previous contract.
If you work for a hogwan, you can try and argue the point with the owner - good luck!
If you work at a public school, the money for your previous years' airfare has been sucked out of the budget and spent in the soju/galbi/norebang fund. |

So, the return ticket, once you complete your contract, doesn't have to be back to your home country? So, for example, say I finish a one year contract and want to go from Seoul to Colombia, the school would pay for my ticket to South America?
Sorry about (slightly) changing the topic, but I assumed the return ticket had to be back to your home country. |

They can give you money that is the equivalent to the cost of a ticket back to your country, but you will have to pay your own way to South America. No one can force you to go directly back to your home country. If a hagwon or uni or whatever says you must go back to your home country, they are idiots who are trying to be Nazis...it's so not true. Many teachers choose to travel when their contract ends. Or you could do what a girl at my previous school did. She finished her contract, went to Thailand for 2 weeks, came back to Korea as a tourist for a week, and then she flew back to her native country. After your contract ends you can do whatever you want. No school owns you then. They might think they do, but they don't. I used to think the smae thing...that I needed to go back to wherever I came from, but no you don't.

Never assume anything. My contract states they will pay to send me anywhere so long as it's equal to or less than the distance home. It could be 'nearer', but much more expensive. |

Come on people it's "LOSE" not "loose". "Loose" is what your mom is, "lose" is when you cannot find something or it's gone for god...er...I mean good.
You are English teachers. Learn what words mean!
Sorry cruisemonkey but I have seen this too much lately all over the place, I am just taking my frustration out on you. Nothing personal. |

My GEPIK contract and Dain Bae states that the end of contract airfare MUST be to my home country and within 10 days...
Does anybody know of a Korean travel agent who will allow you to book and pay for a ticket (so the school gives you the money for it) and then cancel it and get a refund? |
