Ok, it is really time this argument became ridiculous, at least amongst us.
I am here for a pretty simple reason. In theory, this should be as easy as it gets. Conversation classes? Subconciously, this means:
You are an American (or close, ie British, Kiwi, etc) and we want to hang out with you.
OK, so I wake up at 2pm, and make dumb jokes with kids for 6 hours, then walk home (no commute) and download TV shows. I pay 3.3% tax.
________________________________________________
How does me taking this job equate to me not being able to get a job in the US? At worst, it means I was anti social enough to not care about leaving everyone I knew in America. This isnt even close to being the same thing. |

Ah, also, maybe I feel like living in an area that makes me feel like I am in the movie Blade Runner or Total Recall.
Koreans cant say the same thing because they havent lived in the alternative.
DanielKim where are you. |

Please, if there were jobs back home with basically a guarantee of getting hired which gave a free appartment, $2200 a month that the company had somehow made virtually tax free and free healthcare, pension and bonus at the end of the year, would even 10% of the "teachers" be here?t
The real issue, is that our governments have, in the name of free trade and concern for immigrants, almost destroyed the middle class in at least most of our native countries. Even those who are intelligent, responsible and capable have difficulty finding a "real" job. What Koreans think of us beyond how it affects our work life should be of little consequence one way or the other. |

thanks for the contribution, kingplaya.
i love that you put teachers in quotes, given your inability to use the comma.

I don't think it is you can't get a decent job back home but all the jobs want so much from you.
I work for a great company that works in the offshore industry and when I gave my notice 2 weeks ago they mentioned they might need some project accountants in our Singapore location. Our Holding group bases out of Aberdeen even mentioned they would take me on. These are great opportunites that I can't believe they really offered me but yet I am still going to teach English instead of pursue this path. Why? Because I don't want to push papers the rest of my life. It absolutely sucks! You work your ass off and what do you get; a mesely promotion, a raise and a plaque(spelling?). I am sitting at work as we speak on a Saturday with next Friday being my last day. Honestly, I am sick of working my ass off 8-6 usually Monday to Saturday, I have no life!!
When I retire I don't want to look back on my life with regret thinking what I could of done....
Although, I am really glad I am leaving on good terms so I have something to fall back on. |

You compose sentences like this, and then skewer me on my grammar? How about answering my response instead of trolling? Would you work for $500 a month in a country if it reminded you of Star Wars? |

Provided E2s can prevent being used or ripped off, working in Korea is a bonus in many ways.
Free airfare(upgrade to business class if you don't wanna fly in coach.), low taxes on pay and utilities(COX communications charge 20 bucks for a landline; make 6 bucks in overseas calls and pay an extra 20 bucks in assorted taxes, etc same with cable, electric, gas), three to four hours of teaching a day for some even less for others as compared to 8/9 hours or more in the west; An excellent transportation system cheap and reliable to everywhere; free apt. with new furnishings; low taxes(as I mentioned utilities etc I was meaning as an indirect form of taxation you are spared on the ROK= more bucks for you); and, if you can swing it excellent vacations(rather than sitting in class during vacations if you are working in a public school get the co-teacher to get permission/sign a form from the POE for you to "do your work" at home which effectively gives you the same vacation breaks of full summer/winter as people on 90/120k back home(well, the ones I know have this on/off work clause in their contracts.
Korea as I said can be a gift if you play it right(also includes saving with a view to the future which is the E2s responsibility). |

I think it's funny when Koreans say this. It's like they are admitting that their country is a horrible place and that no one in their right mind would go there unless they had no alternatives back home. |

That sentence is perfectly fine. I grew up in fairfield county, ct and had a crazy old bearded english teacher that set me up just fine. Fine enough that even this and the previously ugly sentence are good to go.
stop listenin 2 masta p and we can do this propa. |

the star wars point:
koreans look at us like we couldnt sell fruit on the street like they do.
personally, i think i work harder than that everyday.
keeping a job is, like woody allen (i am told) said,"
showing up is 80%.
ive got day trading experience. i could do a bank job. connect me with someone who won't think im committing a crime when im not awake at 1130am. |
