I was speaking with some people the other night about applying for Uni jobs and they reminded me that not only will I need a decent suit, but (the Korean in the group) also suggested that I get a good pair of shoes, and a nice watch, as those are somewhat important status indicators and could be helpful at an interview.
So I was wondering what your all take on that is, as well as any suggestions on where I should go to buy a good watch and shoes? The suit wont be as tough, I'm sure I can do that, but I've never really needed a nice watch before (hell I don't even wear a watch), so don't know much about what 'nice' means for watch other than that it'll most likely be expensive.
Please help me get more professional. |

Were you dressed in rags when he suggested this to you? |

I wore a sweater, dress shirt, khaki pants, and tennis shoes, and was offered the job pretty much on the spot (though she had to get it approved, she said she was going to be for it without explicitly saying it).
I also got a Uni job offer via a telephone interview. I do have a masters plus 3 years of ph.d work, but that was in French not English (Ucla and Uc Santa Barbara - the school you went to is probably the most important, prestigious thing. If you went to an Ivy league school, you could work anywhere).
They do care about dress though. I wore shorts and a polo shirt to a teacher's day celebration (only because they gavie me 30 minutes notice and I live 20 minutes from school!). The older male professors definitely noticed. But the head of our department is a female and we're great friends so I don't stress that.
If it's an older male interviewing, dress as formally as possible. They do take that stuff seriously. Usually their English is quite poor, so they'll probably have someone younger do it, but I guess it can't hurt to go full formal. |

koreans are extremely image concious so you better dress nicely for an interview but I dont think its necessary to have an expensive watch, |

In my estimation, most people couldn't remember what kind of watch you were wearing, or if you were wearing one.
Nice shoes can be found in department stores, no prob unless your size is above average.
What size are you? Is this situation a problem due to being above average in size?
In that case, it could be a problem when it comes to dress shirts and jackets. Tall sizes can be difficult to find.
If that is the case you need know where you can find tall sizes. I could help you with that if you want.
The best thing you can do to make a good impression is to forget about watches
and do something to improve the impression YOU will make.
If you want to read a great book regarding making a good impression, and communication in general,
I really recommend: HOW TO TALK TO ANYONE
92 Little Tricks for Big Success in Relationships
You can find it at Kyobo Bookstore.
After you ace the interview and land the job, you can reward yourself and buy a watch,
and if you want you can buy me lunch. |
