You don't understand the passion of soccer fans-it's just manifesting before World Cup time.

Don't believe in the hype and scaremongering. Firstly tourists in south Africa experience only slightly more crime than tourists in australia. 0.8 % versus 0.4 % respectively and tourist murders are EXTREMELY rare (thailand has a much higher rate for example). Violent Crime in South Africa is something that happens for the gross majority to the very poor and is commited in the form of drunken in fighting by a known person 80% of the time. Of the so called 50 murders a day (it's closer to 30) less than 1 on average is a white person. I'm not saying other peoples lives matter less , but as a tourist in South Africa you fall into that risk group. So for each day you stay in south africa that means you have a 1 in 6 million chance of getting murdered. You have more chance of dying on the plane on the way over than at the world cup.

Those are the facts , and many white south african hate to hear it because there is nothing they love more than a good moan about black people. Use it or don't use it ..believe it or don't believe it. It's your life at the end of the day .

This issue is disgusting though. While South Africa does have a huge illegal immigrant problem , is this really the noble cause black south africans fought for freedom for ? I've always said the most racist people in the world are black south africans.....against other africans.

From Soccerlens.com

Quote:
So with FIFA recently admitting that they are preparing a 400m contingency fund in preparation for the possible collapse of the 2010 South African World Cup, confidence seems, to say the least, to be a bit shaky. The governing body has at last looked in the eye some of the concerns that soccer fans have been outlining all along a lack of solid infrastructure, shoddy safety for the players and the spectators, inadequate stadiums, and a lack of tourism appeal and hospitality to make this more developing country seem as alluring as the lodgings of the more recent Cups Germany, the United States, Japan and Korea, and France are all considerably more developed than South Africa.

Just like Brazil. The millions of millions of dollars should be spent building up the country....not just stadiums for sport. I love sports. But poor countries need this money for services that improve their life. Only FIFA and the government will prosper. The rest of the poor people will continue to live on the fringes with little hope of change. Which leads to crime since if they can't earn it....steal it.

When I was in S.A. in January I heard a disturbing trend. The criminals would shoot the victims in the leg or arm so that they would have to call the ambulance first....and not the police. Thus they would be able to escape. Sad.

Lack of tourist appeal and hospitality?

Say what you like but with it's natural beauty, beach resorts , fauna and flora , diverse cultures , adventure activities and fantastic tourist infrastructure and highly affordable prices (go look at any list of top rated world hotels and resorts) south africa is a tourism dream. We also have top sports stadiums and really solid infrastructure in our cities....honestly...who is spouting this nonsense ? My country has many problems...the ability to host top class sporting events is not one of them....we've hosted the cricket and rugby world cups with great sucess and without incident....there is no rational reason to think for a second the 2010 world cup won't be one of the best ever seen.

With all due respect the millions(billions) of dollars south africa has put into the event will reap great rewards if they can use it as a platform to boost allready booming tourism and help change ignorant attitudes about africa and encourage investment. South Africa's minerals are running out and they realise the need to change the focus of the economy.

The problem will be solved in time, but only if Mbeki is allowed to continue his pathetic and useless leadership and reduce his country to yet another basket case.
Then all the refugees will be flooding out of south africa rather than into it. Laughing
