If you don't try to educate away your students' xenophobia, who will?

Teaching your students how to speak English will do them absolutely no good in the end if they believe it is acceptable behavior to insult a foreign adult to his or her face.

End it. At least do your part.

The parents have so much more time with the kids and so much more influence, I wonder what good the teacher can do. I still believe you have to try though. But you can't just beat it into their heads that everything they think is wrong, you have to pursuade with logic, which takes more time and effort, and is difficult if their level of English is pretty low. Worth it though.

As kids in all countries most likely have ill conceived views on a lot of issues, Korea does as well.

I have kids tell me Osama Bin Laden is a hero, Booshie is the devil, gay people are sick, homeless people are lazy, black people have dirty skin, etc etc.

I used to always tell them they are wrong, or ask them to justify their answer. Lately I have just let them keep their views. No matter what I say, they never seem to change or listen.

What are other people's takes on this issue?

If the kids say something this outrageous show your real emotion. That may get through to them more than any logic, especially the kind used just to prove you know better than them. I don't know about where you all came from but when I was 12 I heard plenty of pretty sick, racist opinions expressed by kids at school - presumably they too picked up their 'opinions' from their parents - but most of them will have grown out of it, and none of them at the time wanted to listen to any would-be Socrates proving them wrong.

I'm sure they don't want it, and neither do they want to see you get angry. But you can't get through to kids with your emotions only. If they don't see point, all the emotion in the world won't change their minds.
