Okay, I just got back from my trip to Kota Kinabalu.

The area is generally nice but its tourist facilities and services remain underdeveloped. Also the place (if not Malaysia in general) is pricier than Thailand or the Philippines and lacking in nightlife. I didn't try the water sports, but the beach on Manukan Island was dirty and most of the foreign clientele were people over age 45.

The Waterfront area was okay, but beer prices there were high for Southeast Asia (about US$5-8 a beer). Happy hours go from 4-9 p.m. but the cost of booze was definitely a downer. I'm thinking since Malaysia is a Muslim country, they tax the booze a bit more.

Then there are taxis. A short trip will cost you at least five ringgits (1,650 won) and oftentimes more. My resort was 30 minutes outside of the city and a cab ride cost 50 ringgits (16,500 won).

Finding nightlife outside of the Waterfront can be a challenge, so I'd do homework before going there.

All in all, I spent more money than I had initially planned to in Kota Kinabalu, so if you want a cheap destination, I'd say Kota Kinabalu definitely ain't the place. I don't regret going, but I'd had much more fun in Thailand and the Philippines.

I have been to Malaysia before and it definitely is much more expensive that both the Philippines and Thailand, which is to be expected in a country with a much higher GDP per capita.

Malaysia $14,400
Thailand $ 8,000
Philippines $3,300

The booze is heavily taxed, but a lot of the islands are duty-free and the drinks are much cheaper. If you go the KL area, and the peninsula, it is pretty much as developed as Korea.

Anyways, I am rambling, but my point is that Malaysia is more expensive than other countries in the area except for Singapore and Brunei.

At any rate, I'm not going back to Kota Kinabalu for a long while, better deals are to be had elsewhere.

A lot of development is going on there, so who knows if it'll get better over the next five years.

Malaysia only really has a decent night life in KL and some of the beach towns like Cherating. Sarawak and Sabah aren't known for their lively nightlife.
