My high school is currently sorting that I move to a new apartment because my rent has increased at the old one.

It's all a big confusing but it seems they want me to find a place that costs 400k a month with no deposit. This could only get me a tiny hovel by my estimate.

It seems everyone else I know has a big apartment and works for public schools. Am I being done in ?

The school should really front some key money.
My (GEPIK) school pays 400k/month with a 5mill deposit, and the apartment is generous at 16pyeong (47sq metres), from what i've heard the key money can make a really big difference.

My overall belief on having a smooth korean experience (esp. in the public school system) is to go with the flow and make as few waves as possible, yet this is one issue where i reckon you put your foot down as coming home to a 5-6pyeong place everyday begins to get you down after a while (I know from experience). The school should really also have been allocated some money for a deposit. If you are with one of the bigger programs (gepik, epik, smoe etc) i'd recommend communicating with a co-ordinator if your efforts at the school fall on deaf ears...

Yeah seriously. I'm working with a new bunch now and wires often get crossed. I'm also in Gepik, there surely has to be some key money ? Strickly speaking can the school get away with this ?

If they try to put me into a total shoebox I'll be upset.

I hate to kick up a fuss myself , but If I'm going to start to feel like I'm getting less than any other school maybe I ought to move on.

Kick up a fuss. Don't let them treat you like a bitch.

Give your handler a good kick in the *beep*, that will learn her.

That's the thing. The handler (zoo keeper?) is really nice and bad news always comes from the top. So it's her that has to deal with it from both sides. Makes it really easy for them (the principal and his cronies who I have nothing to do with) to try and pull this nonsense. Cowards.

The end result is that me , being the nice guy that I am , am forced to make someones life miserable to just get what I feel rightly entitled to.

Anyway...can someone confirm that I am entitled for them to pay some deposit ? Cause else I'm going to have to chip in 200k of my own money just to not live in a hole....or put in deposit of my own.

Work for SMOE - first year they placed me in the Co op in Dongdaemun - about 5 pyeong in size.

School wanted me for the second year - said only if they find me a better place. Found a 14 pyeong studio in Mokdong 13th floor above the traffic - view - no more wet toilet paper as the actually shower is glassed in inside the bathroom.

The funny thing is the cost of the co op per month is the same as my studio that I have now - 700,000won per month - no key money either.

The higher the key money, the less the rent. Good luck finding a place that won't accept a deposit.

Just find a good place. A nice 1 room that big enough for your bed, a desk, and a couch. Make sure it has a balcony or veranda for drying clothes and a washer.

Location is important too, beacuse you don't want to spend a long time commuting. Then tell your school you want this place. If they don't give it to you then you'll be going to the labor board.

Turns out that they might be able to hook me up a deposit. I mentioned contacting Gepik and checking up on the situation and suddenly things started happening. 14 pyeong for 400k (which they'll pay plus the deposit). Not my dream apartment but it'll do.

God I miss my house .
