I'm assuming that many of you go out and enjoy a few beers together on an evening, which got me thinking about who is generally the tightest group when it comes to throwing in cash at the end of the night.

Just for the record, I'm English and have voted British, but then in our town there's a disproportionate number of Brits compared to other nationalities and I've seen a few squabbles amongst my compatriots in respect of who or who hasn't put in their fair share.

Do you mean 'tight' as in the British sense meaning 'mean, stingy, cheap'?

I'm tighter than a bull's arse in fly season.

Not really. I'm the worst combination of (a) spend lavishly, (b) always worry about it.

As an American, I feel we're pretty tight when it comes to divvying up the bill. I've relaxed a bit on it here, but I still find myself itemizing from time to time.

^^Yeah, 'tight' as in reluctant to put their hand in their pockets or, they simply disappear when the bill arrives.

I literally throw money away. I'll put in over what I've had just so we're quick leaving, I hate the idea of hanging around and arguing about who had what. It's only money at the end of the day. On the flipside there was an English guy in my city who would always disappear when the bill had to be paid. He was a tight-ass. Never seen anything like it.

As for others in my city, they seem tight compared to me but that's not really that difficult. Canadians seem to have the priorities with the bill and the sharing of certain things. The yanks seem to add up what they had and keep to it. The Aussies usually have a budget.

On the same subject, what's your largest bar tab been whilst you've been in Sk? Me and the Missus ran up 120,000 in around 5-hours a few weeks back. No food etc, just Martinis, Vodka Cranberries and copious bottles of Heineken. I reckon me and my fellow FTs have run up bigger tabs, but that's my record for just the two of us.

I'm voting Korean.
Part of that is 'cultural' in that groups expect one person to pay. Generally the ringleader or the eldest.
I know one Korean gentleman who always ran up bar tabs, borrowed from friends to pay, then borrowed from others to pay those friends... in a never-ending cycle.
(I'll even wager some of you know who.)
I never balked at paying the bulk of a bill, especially when surrounded by a harem of k-hotties.

As far a running up tabs, who remembers Bob? Maybe she's still around.
She claimed I owed over 300k won, over the course of a long weekend.
Not my style. If I don't have cash, I go to the atm or go home.
Still, it was a festive weekend, and I likely bought rounds for others.
I settled up eventually. But was perm on the pay as you play plan.

When I am with close friends, I make it a point to try and pay and we generally alternate paying on nights out.
In a group, I will throw my share plus a little.
With family....damn it....I pay it all every time....

didn't vote because it's dumb to make those kind of generalizations, but my korean friends (who make way less than me or the other westerners) almost always offered more than their share, and it was usually westerners who skulked out early claiming other commitments and 'forgetting' to leave anything or enough to cover their beer and food.

Biggest I ever paid was right at 1.400.000 won. Party with my friends when I thought i was leaving Korea forever. A few people chipped in but I paid most of it myself. And it was at a regular western bar in Wonju. Nothing really special. Then a lot of us went to a couple more bars that might but with no where near that much as a tab.

You should have seen a couple of the Brits who were here before you (actually one was Irish). They made the current lot look like a model of largess. And if they were too cheap to go to the pub they'd just invite themselves over to drink at Cruisemonkey's.
