I'm voting Korean.

Really? I sure haven't found this is the case when drinking with mixed Korean-waegook groups, unless the Koreans are very young and it's obvious they don't have much money. I've found Koreans almost always try to pay the bill if they can, probably helped by the fact that in their minds the top dog pays.

Biggest I ever paid was right at 1.400.000 won. Party with my friends when I thought i was leaving Korea forever. A few people chipped in but I paid most of it myself. And it was at a regular western bar in Wonju. Nothing really special. Then a lot of us went to a couple more bars that might but with no where near that much as a tab.

Wow. Depending on how many were in attendance, that's some heavy drinking. I tip my hat to you Sir.

i voted canadian, but i have to make a point of saying i've seen some the stingiest bastards of every nationality in korea. it's amazing how many cheapskates are running around here, and even more baffling that they go out, order drinks, often times more than they can afford, then whinge and moan when the bill comes out. that's if they're anywhere to be found when we're settling up! i've always been good about rounds and picking up drinks for no particular reason, but some people just suck! i find myself grabbing drinks at the bar in certain company, just so i can avoid dealing with their bullshit when it comes to the tab.

The Canucks I've met have been pretty good when it comes to coughing up. They're usually the last to leave as well, which may or may not be a good thing.

I'm pretty loose with my wallet and so are the people I hang out with/grew up with, but I heard the snowbirds in Florida and Arizona have a big reputation for not tipping. Not a lot of Canadian love by waitstaff down there, I hear.

On the same subject, what's your largest bar tab been whilst you've been in Sk? Me and the Missus ran up 120,000 in around 5-hours a few weeks back. No food etc, just Martinis, Vodka Cranberries and copious bottles of Heineken. I reckon me and my fellow FTs have run up bigger tabs, but that's my record for just the two of us.

460,000 Won at a Jazz club in Seoul about 2 months ago... there for about 5 hours...

From my experiences I have to vote British, but I have met cheap people from all of the countries on that list.

You forget a third and, you may be surprised to hear, I've also met a few others whose wallets didn't appear to need any lubrication.

Also, that asshole who we don't speak of anymore was also pretty generous with his Soju, even if it was 09.00 in the morning.

A third... oh yes, her - well for someone who never drinks more than 250cc even an o-chun won note in the pile is pretty generous.

I literally throw money away. I'll put in over what I've had just so we're quick leaving, I hate the idea of hanging around and arguing about who had what. It's only money at the end of the day. On the flipside there was an English guy in my city who would always disappear when the bill had to be paid. He was a tight-ass. Never seen anything like it.

Me too. I hate fucking about working out who pays what. Just split the bill evenly unless someone has clearly had far more or far less than others.

Well under 100,000 won for all of us. You guys spend too much money in bars--go Korean style! It's more fun and cheaper.

I don't like the Korean system of settling up at the end of the night, I think it's to open to abuse by unscrupulous landlords. I'd much rather pay on a drink-by-drink basis.

^

Koreans pay in turn--this time I'll pay, you pay next time. It's understood: I pay for the meal, you pay at the Hof, and he'll pay at karaoke.

Of course, if you have the good fortune of being the only foreigner in the group, you really don't have to worry about paying at all! Wink

Largest I've ever paid was about 12k. My own and part of the guy whose birthday it was.

If you make it a rule of thumb to keep it to a couple drinks at the places that aren't free you can save yourself a lot of headache money-wise.
