Here's a warning for any teachers who might be teaching some extra classes on the side.....I know, technically it's not legal, so no flamming please.

The name of the organization I was working for is "Exciting Korea" and I always delt with Mr. Lee. I never had any problems with getting my pay until I returned to Canada last Friday for vacation. Mr. Lee promised me that he would put my pay into my account last Thursday. On Thursday I checked my account and the money had not been deposited. I then called Mr. Lee and he said that he would deposit the money on Friday morning. I checked my account again on Friday afternoon and the money still had not been deposited. Since then he hasn't answered his phone or my emails.

I know teaching extra classes outside of the hogwon is not legal and some here on the board will post that I deserved to be cheated out of my money.........so please don't waste your time in telling me. This is just a warning for any other teachers who might be working for them as I know that they have a large number of teachers doing so.

Ouch! Such is the risk you take when doing something illegal. High reward=high risk. You accepted this "chance" when you began illegally working. Unfortunately (for you) you just crapped out.

Better luck next time!

Lush, were you the first kid to always say 'I told you so!!!'?

You did exactly what the OP didn't want.

IWACIMA, if you can give me a little bit of information about this company, by a PM, I'd appreciate it. You piqued my curiosity.

If you were doing "illegal" work then wouldn't it have been better to get the money in cash?

No, I wasnt the first kid to always say that. Exclamation And I wasnt flaming the OP either! You did notice the Better luck next time! Razz in there didnt you? I am just a little tired of how people come to message boards and complain about being cheated at illegal jobs! Thats like going on a casinos website and saying, Johnny the bookie from the block took my bet- but now wont pay up! When you go in with your eyes open, knowing its illegal, and then get screwed you have only one person to blame.

For me, I know I would really be pissed if I didnt get paid. I work at a Korean company and believe me, I get propositioned weekly to tutor. Legalities aside, I find my personal time with my family and friends here is just to precious for me to trade for Won. Thats just me. If I was single I cant say for 100% I would not do it. But if I was single, and I did do it, I would be accepting the risk that there would be no recourse available to me should my pay be withheld.

What is that saying about swimming with sharks?

Lush,

I don't think he was whining at all. He just wanted to let other teachers that work for this outfit know what might be coming.

And, by the way, bookies are generally more honest than most of the Koreans I have worked for.

Sorry, I did not think the OP was whining. When I commented about people coming here and complaining I was speaking generally rather then specifically. My bad!

I think it's good to name names here when one gets the shaft- it's good, first hand, information! It serves as and advisory and warning to others! Very Happy

Interesting dichotomy how the same users that occasionally come on here and vouch for, fight for, and support ILLEGAL lower wage workers from smaller and poorer nations who don't get their earned pay will, at the same time tell a fellow teacher who did nothing more illegal than the former that "you got what you deserved" or silimar.

In any event Iwacima the notification is much appreciated and it WILL have an effect on them, I'm sure.

Well,

You can kiss that Won goodbye little man... Laughing

I just don't get why you would go through an agent or agency to do privates... Confused

It just adds to the risk and takes away from the income.

As they are illegal it seems you have no recourse whatsoever...an unfortunate turn of events but at least you didn't get deported and lost whatever money you had in the Korean banks...just ne happy little dude.
