Hi,

I'm wondering how much my severance will be. If I'm making 2.2 a month and 300,000 is how much my apartment costs a month, will I get 2.2 or 2.5? I mean, is my pay 2.2 or really 2.5?

Also, my school wants to not pay the severance until a month after I leave, when my last utility bill comes. They want to take that last utility bill and subtract it from my severance and then send me the money. I have trust issues regarding this. Is there a way around this?

thanks

this is a ps

You'll get 2.2, your housing is an "allowance" and is not part of your salary. If your 2.2 contains another allowance such as a rural allowance etc, then your severence will be lower.

I don't have time to give you the link now, but severance is equal to one month's average of the last 3 months' pay. This includes any bonuses and overtime that you've received. I'm gonna guess that a housing allowance wouldn't be considered part of it. It's pretty normal to wait a month, plus it gives you a lower tax rate for the end-of-contract payment. However, they can call the power company on the last day of your contract and find out what the bill is on that day, so that's not a legitimate reason to wait a month if you've had trouble getting paid during the rest of your contract or you're leaving the country. It seems like the Labor Standards Act allows up to a month for severance payment. If you go to the Ministry of Labor site, you can read it for yourself.
