Thanks, videam, the truth is that schools DO fire teachers w/out good reason, their reason is to save money usually. I did not write those email excerpts to the recruiter.

Those weren't my words. After "Gary Kasparov" copied and pasted your post from another site, I simply copied and pasted the recruiter's response in the interests of full disclosure. The headers at the top of the post make it clear who the author is.

When discussing which recruiters are good and which are bad, it is best not to generalize about particular companies. Even within each recruiting agency, you can have a much different experience depending on who you deal with.
It is much better to ask questions about specific recruiters at each agency.
The best recruiter that I have come across is Mini Kim from KimnJoe. She was very helpful throughout the process, always answered emails quickly (even outside of business hours) and often would chat with me over Gmail chat to save time. She was very friendly and added a personal touch to her communications. It was almost like dealing with a newfound friend.
I ended up choosing a job in Seoul that I found on my own rather than the ones in Busan that she suggested, but Mini still stayed in touch for several months, shooting me an email or an instant message maybe once a month checking to see how things were going.
If I ever decide to teach in Busan, she would be the first person I would contact. |

This seems like we are spending too much time comparing rotten apples. I would like to see a comprehensive list of the good schools, along with their location and some idea of when the teachers there might be leaving. Kind of like where we have the Buy, Sell, Trade section of the forum but have it applied to the schools.
This may go against the spirit of this ESL site, which I am thankful for, but I don't see why we are spending so much time warning others about bad recruiters when it's the school that we're going to be working at. Shouldn't we be more concerned with which schools out there are worth working at?
Dave, I think you got a great site, but it's missing something like I briefly outlined above. I would be willing to pay a nominal fee as a teacher to see a list of good schools with a schedule of when the school might be looking for a new teacher (like when the current teacher's contract is up). |

I've wanted to see something like that for a long time, but it isn't going to happen. For one reason or another, those that find good jobs seem to think that it is top secret information that can't be shared with anyone. Perhaps they are worried that an influx of applications will make those "good schools" realize that they can offer less.
I find it all a little silly. There are hundreds of threads about bad schools, but barely any about good ones. As useful as I think it would be, it just won't happen because nobody seems willing to share the names of good places to work. |

This is another lie from the recruiter.
The contract that Ask Now emailed to me did NOT provide for an airfare deduction. If you look at ASK NOW's advertisements, you will also see that they advertise "free airfare" w/no stipulations. This is consistent w/the contract emailed to me by Ask Now that I signed and emailed back to Ask Now.
I learned later on that Ask Now and the hakwon (ECC Kumho) attached my signature page to a DIFFERENT contract and filed it w/immigration. This was bait and switch fraud committed by ECC Kumho and Ask Now.
I was paid only 180,000 W (roughly $180 USD) for 3 weeks of full time Kindy teaching... Jason Creswell of Ask Now threatened to file a criminal complaint if I told this story...and I am not posting this from a jail cell.  |

Just assume you're being duped, do your homework on what a job should entail, and confirm everything with the boss.
They're all crooked. Knowing what a legal job in Korea entails and how the employment system works is the only good answer.
Ditto for working at small hagwons. |

Jason Cresswell, recruiter, is a fraud. He tried to recruit me to teach illegally in South Korea for a low grade hakwon. I heard that Cresswell has recruited other teachers to teach illegally, this appears to be his M.O.
Cresswell works with a Korean fraud named Brant Kim to recruit teachers to work illegally in Korea. As you may know, illegal teachers have NO rights whatsoever to collect wages. Any complaining from the teacher about unpaid wages, etc... and the teacher is arrested, jailed, fined and deported. Jason Cresswell works for Korean hakwons as a recruiter of illegal teachers--the hakwons that he works for are all dishonest and will screw you on your wages. Cresswell works with a dirty korean fraud who uses the name "Brant Kim" and another character who claims to be "Brant Kim Senior." Together they try to pressure the teacher to work illegally, a scam.
I was naive and should have realized that Jason Cresswell is a fraud after he tried to recruit me to work illegally. Prior to going to Korea, I received roughly 100 emails from Cresswell. After I got to Korea, he turned his back on me and sought to blacklist me from ever working in Korea. As soon as I was fired from my job at ECC Kumho, I received an email from Cresswell threatening me with criminal prosecution in the event that I posted anything negative about him.
Jason Cresswell never sought to learn my side of the story as to why I was fired from ECC Kumho--I was fired because I voiced my concern that the hakwon failed to provide health insurance. Jason Cresswell never asked me why I was fired, he took the hakwon's side and threatened to prosecute me criminally and blacklist me from teaching in Korea. There might be some decent teaching opportunities in Korea, but you will not find them with Jason Cresswell.
There are lots of scams in Korea as well. Beware of any recruiter like Jason Cresswell that tries to recruit you to teach illegally--they are working for the hakwon and not for you. Cresswell never helped me to recover the money that the hakwon screwed me over for. I offered to resolve the dispute and save face for Cresswell, the hakwon and Kim in exchange for 15% of the disputed amount, about 125,000 won. Jason Cresswell refused to accept my offer.
Jason Cresswell is a selfish liar and a fraud. At best, he will set you up with a crappy hakwon for a crappy wage. Cresswell has posted advice to 'never pay a recruiter' yet he is a recruiter who sells a job search product! Cresswell would argue that this is consistent. After spending a few years in Korea working for hakwons, Jason Cresswell has lost the ability to tell the truth and moreover, the ability to discern the truth from his endless lies. |

All you need to send them to get things started are a current resume and photo.
Some recruiters want you to send them all your documents before you have a job lined up so you have to go through them. It's difficult and time consuming to replace them all. I wouldn't trust that type of recruiter. |
