I have never done this before, but I plan on doing it soon when I arrive. I always wanted to order from the plethora of junk mail left on my apt. door last year. I don't mind going out, but sometimes there's nothing like curling up on a Saturday afternoon and having some soup delivered.

I can read hangeul and know numbers, but I am not fluent. Will I have a hard time ordering food? Can you Korean speakers give us non-fluent speakers some tips to make this easier? I don't just want to blurt out things in English; I'd rather learn to do this in Korean.

Thanks!

Always give your address before you give your food order, speak slowly and clearly, most times they will repeat your address back to you before they take you food order.

really simple I was ordering food to my place after being here a few weeks, on the few occasions I couldn't get it sorted I just went to my local mart and showed them my address and what I wanted and they were more than happy to help call. Cool

Very good question! Can anyone post the Korean for "I'd like to place an order to be delivered to ____ apartment..." The easier, the better!

cheeseface--

So you're saying that when I call I should say "ABC apartments, room 123" before I say anything else?

They get sorta pissy when you order a single serving, at least that's what my gf tells me heh. The only time I bother is if she's visiting, otherwise I just trot my happy ass out for it lol

it's not real hard: even if u're not real good at korean they'll usually be able to work out what u want if u can tell them your address and what you want. i don't know if this is the usual way to do it, but i usually say "주문 받아 주세요 (choomoon bada chooseyo - please take my order)". they'll then probably ask your address (listen out for 주소 (chooso, address). tell em that and then they shd ask u what u want. tell em and that should be it. most local places will then know who u are just by caller i.d, so u might not even have to tell them ur address the next time. i love this delivery thing here in korea!

if you can, visit the place first. they tend to remember westerners well. Point out several items you may order and ask them to translate. I go to a sub meal near my place and just hand them the money. They know what to do pretty much, and most speak some english. Tell them your address and you should be good to go. Good luck.

Here's what i do and it has never failed:

1. When someone answers i say (insert food name) jew-zeh-o.
2. If the person taking your call starts blathering on just say "yeh" or grunt a few times.
3. When they say "OH-DEE", now is the time to tell them your address.
4. Once they have your address just grunt a few times or say thank you and they'll hang up.
5. Food will usually arrive within 30 minutes.

No matter what, I have to repeat myself three times to be understood. No matter what, my boyfriend has to repeat himself three times to be understood. No matter what, my taekwondo master has to repeat himself three times to be understood.

It's frickin' worse than ordering Papa John's back home.

I always make sure that they repeat my order and address correctly.

It's funny that you mention PJ's. PJ's speaks English and already knows my address when i call them- they are by far the easiest to order from in this country.

PJ's near my house in Atlanta (the PJ's that stole my credit card info and tried to wire $1500 to the Philippines) used to answer the phone like this.

"Hll ds Ppa Jun's kan tk ror?"

And my boyfriend just discovered that the Chinese joint we order from knows my address and our standard order. Too bad I'm moving out Tuesday!

It'll be success when she gets the food. Wink

Oh, be careful...my first time ordering food here...we had an earthquake. I swear, it was the LEAP in my Korean ability that caused it. Wink
