I need to buy a few things online but I don't have a credit card. Is there any convenient way to do that, which doesn't involve having to dump half my monthly pay check into a prepaid credit card? I'm in Seoul and bank with Hana Bank.

Incidentally the cash/ATM card the bank issued me has VISA and other credit card-ish stuff on it, is there any way I can use it?

Are you buying from a Korean website or an overseas website?

A Korean website, probably.

OK. Without knowing exactly what card you've been issued, it's hard to tell if you can use it.

Check cards can be used like a credit card. But a simple ATM cash card can't.

What you do is to make your purchase and choose *bank transfer*. When that's done, you will be given an account number. Copy th account number, the bank (you can usually choose this... and woori is normally one of the banks you can transfer money to, saving you the transaction cost), the name of the account holder, and the amount you need to transfer.

Then you can just go to a bank and send the money, via a teller or an ATM.

A much easier way is to go and set up internet banking. Then you can do this all at home!

My Hana Bank cash card is a visa card, so I can use it to pay for stuff at the till, but I'm pretty sure I can't use it online.

On the front it says BC card, electronic use only, Check(n)Magic, International (and yet also oddly, Use only in Korea), and has an expiry date and a security number on the back.

Is there no easy, disposable debit card I can pick up here to purchase things on the internet? I am agressively averse to dealing with banks even in English, I really don't want to have to apply for anything, its one of the reasons I don't have a credit card to begin with.

Well now, then you are in luck.

It's a check card. You can use it like a credit card, because it is a debit card. So when you buy stuff on the internet, just click on where it says *payment by credit card* (in Korean of course) and choose your card.

You need to choose *BC card*, though, and not hana card.

Why do you say "in Korean of course", can I only shop from Korean websites?

With the Korean debit card, yes. Only for Korean websites.

Holy crap! Really?! I have an IBK "check" card with the BC logo and an expiry date, too. I use it as a debit card, but I had no idea that I could use it on the internet. So many problems could have been avoided. Oh my lord! I had no idea. I've had this thing for almost 3 years and no one ever told me. The way I figured out I could use debit was just trial and error (I forgot to take money out before Emart and I gave it a go).

Thank you! Surprised
