I have wow, have just got back into it and have been cranking it from here. I was lucky enough to have created my account in New Zealand and so was able to download and install it by loging into the blizzard site.
Unfortunately my friend, a fellow teacher, wants to join and quest with me BUT the blizzard site i use cant be used for Koreans. They have their own .co.kr site. Funnily enough its all in Korean which my friend doesn't want to have to continue to use...
Ive managed to get it downloading but am worried about a few things:
1) will the game be in Korean, is it a simple task of giving him my language pack or is it going to be a pain??
2)I assume we will be able to play together??
3) with the account he makes can he login on the normal blizzard site for account maintenance in English? or is he stuck using the .co.kr?
We searched and searched online and in computer shops, and were not able to find it....
The only thing i can think of doing if we cant get it to work, and i can get no help here is to get a mate from nz to make an account with the ten day trial, using an nz ip addy, then he can hopefully login and install like i did...or i spose we could buy an account...
sigh...so hard to get simple things sorted.
any help appreciated...sorry for the bad spelling/grammar. no sleep |

Why don't you make the 2nd account with your NZ address and just have him download it from Blizzard's site?
You CANNOT get a legit American version of WoW in Korea. If you use a Korean address, you will get banned. I know several people who got banned with the reason Korea has their own version. |

You can't use an English WoW and use it on a Korean server, and vice versa.
If you 2 want to play together then one of use has to buy a new WoW account. Also, you can't change the language. |

because its reading the ip when we sign up and blocking us. ill have to get someone in nz to sign up for me....then ill be able to login....

You can't have 2 accounts under the same name play at the same time. |

| I have the American versions I can copy for you. Not sure if NZ uses same servers as we do, but then again, you guys are Oceania right? Should work. Let me know. |

I am pretty sure you can get both a US version of the game as well as create a US account online. (I am about 80% certain that NZ/Aussieland are on US servers).
Simply go to the world of warcraft main site (worldofwarcraft.com) and follow the links to DL a free version of the game. I am pretty certain you can DL the whole game version 2.0 at one time or streamline it to get into the game faster. Once you've created the 'trial account' use your credit card to turn it into a full account. Once that is done you can then buy the expansion on your account management page. You can DL the expasion too.
If you don't have your own computer all this can be done online at your local PC bang. Use your iPod (I know you got to have one) as a portable hard-drive and play it off of that any time you want on any computer.

P.S. If you already have an account created, you CAN log onto US servers using a Korean version of the game. Everything will be in Korean, but you will be on US servers. |

How is that possible? I've tried many times and I've always gotten the same error, "there is no account by that name" |

I can confirm this. My GF and I both play on US servers, (Kil'Jaeden), but we've tried playing from some PC Bang's here and it doesn't even log us in.
In order to play on a US / Oceanic server you have to either:
1) Edit the Realmlist.wtf file (in your WoW directory) in textedit and change the location from .kr to .us in the file and re-save it or...
2) Set up a US / Oceanic account (which we had) and log on using a computer set up to accommodate that, such as our laptops that we had up and running before hand.

Just to be sure, you cannot play a Korean account on US servers and vise versa, but you can use a Korean version of the game to play a US account on US servers. Here is how:
Walk into any PC bang and find a nice comfortable chair to occupy. Open the worldofwarcraft folder. In the same area you would find the wow.exe file you will see a realmlist.wtf file. Open that file using notepad and you will see:
set realmlist kr.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
set patchlist kr.version.worldofwarcraft.com
change it so it now reads:
set realmlist us.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
set patchlist us.version.worldofwarcraft.com
Basically, you changed the 'kr' to 'us'. Save the file and open the game as usual. You can now use your US account info to log into the game. Please keep in mind EVERYTHING will be in Korean. The quests, items, logs, interface and talents. The auction house won't recognize English and the NPCs even speak in Korean. Might be worth your while just to hear the Nelf WSG chick say, "Oneahaysayo". Of course, anything typed will be in English, i.e. whispers, guild chat, etc. It's a quick fix at best.

P.S. The game must be fully patched. If it is not you will get an error message. To patch the game simply keep the 'kr' in the realmlist.wtf file and try and log on. Even with your US account info it will patch the game. |

You are VERY wrong on this account. I had 2 accounts both under my name that I played for a year and a half. I duel boxed 2 chars at one time, so I was also playing both AT THE SAME TIME. A lot of people do that.

This shouldn't happen. It could be your ISP. There are a lot of American soldiers living off base with Korean Internet who are able to sign up. I first signed up while living in Korea. I just used my Canadian address.
As people have said DO NOT TRY TO USE THE KOREAN VERSION. This goes for PC bangs etc. At your house, download the American version and you should be fine. |

I went to the PC bang last night and I was able to set up a trail account and begin DLing the whole game up to patch 2.0 for FREE. Again, I am in Korea, used a Korean PC bang computer and signed up for a US trial account.
If you have a credit card you can be up and running a fully patched, expansioned WoW in 4-5 hours. Again, this can be done at any PC bang. Just save the files onto a portable HD... like your iPod.

| I strongly recommend that nobody play WoW in Korea. I have played on American servers in Korea for the last three years with no problems. But that changed suddenly. My guild mates in Korea and Japan also played with no problems at all and then one of them got his account suspended. There was no justifiable explanation for why they suspended his account. When he inquired further and researched why his account was suspended it was because Blizzard was suspending accounts from Asian IP addresses. I didn't think it would happen to me but it did last year. All of a sudden they suspended my account and boy did it ever piss me off!!! It also happened to my friend in the UK when he played on a US server. |

This is a timely topic, because I was just about to ask this question. Couple tips/questions from what I know of WoW:
1. Blizzard does ban people for playing from IP addresses outside their "designated" geographical location. However, this is very easily circumvented by using a proxy IP. I am not going into any technical details, but there are numerous free proxies out there, or you can pay for a secure VPN tunnel (usually fairly cheap).
2. The $64,000 question: what's the latency like from South Korea to US servers? Anyone who plays PvP knows that even a small amount of lag can be crippling. Can any veteran WoW players confirm the viability of playing high end or PvP WoW from SK? How about on a European server? (There is a European version of WoW, with its own servers, that is for all intents and purposes a separate game.)
3. There are nine Oceanic (Australia/NZ) servers that are English-language. How easy it would be to get an Australian version of the game, or if such is required, I'm not sure. I have emailed Blizzard support but have not received an answer yet (2 days now, which is odd because they are usually very quick to respond).
It'd be a bit annoying to have to start over from a European or Oceanic server, but I haven't been playing WoW all that long so I wouldn't mind terribly.
Edit: I just read the .wtf file hack described above, and I see no reason why that wouldn't work with the Oceanic servers as well, if anyone knows the proper prefix to use for them... |
