I'm trying to make sure my bag isn't too big.
What size (approximately) were the luggage bags you took? For those of you who took pretty big bags, did anyone ever check their weight, or did they just toss them on the belt?
FWIW, I'm flying American Airlines, and then Korean Air. |

Most bags are able to fit on airplanes, the main issue is the amount of weight in your suitcases. I personally tried to fit as much heavy stuff that I needed into the suitcase. I barely reached the maximum on all bags and was able to reach Korea without extra fees.
According to American Airlines, you are allowed two pieces of checked luggage measuring a maximum total of 62 in./157 cm (Length+Width+Height) and 50 lb./23 kg. American Airlines also allows one carry-on of a maximum 45 in./114 cm and 40 lb./18 kg. Here is the link to their baggage website http://www.aa.com/aa/i18nForward.do?p=/travelInformation/baggage/baggageAllowance.jsp Of course, you are allowed to carry your purse/briefcase/laptop/etc.
According to Korean Air, you are allowed two pieces of checked luggage measuring a maximum total of 107 in./273 cm. (L+W+H) and 50 lb./23 kg. One carry-on of a maximum 45 in./115 cm. and 44 lb./20 kg. Here is a link to their baggage website http://www.koreanair.com/local/na/ld/eng/ft/faq/eng_ft_faq_bg01.htm.
Basically, your maximum checked is 62 combined inches and 50 pounds and your maximum carry-on is 45 in. and 40 lb. Please make sure you follow all the rules of what to carry and not, since they toss out liquids from your carry-on (damn religious nuts on both sides). |

There seem to be different rules that apply to those with international itineraries. I'm going to call, but thanks!
How big were your bags, would you say? |

On the Korean Air website the carry on luggage allowance is NOT 44lb/20kg. It is 25lb/12kg.
Travellers from the US to Korea are very lucky in terms of checkin luggage allowances ... I didn't realise they were as generous as they are. From other parts of the world the normal allowance is only 20kg so less than half as much .... I guess that is why people from the US don't have much trouble with the luggage allowance. |

I flew with Asiana from Heathrow. The allowance was 20kg, (quite cruddy for long haul). I had 34 kg, and got screwed to the tune of 180 pounds sterling, which must be 300 odd US dollars. never been so sickened.
When i took the same 34kg's from Dublin to Heathrow I only got a 20 euro penalty. 180 STG?? what a rip |

That is close enough to the same thing that happened to my flying Asiana from Sydney to Seoul ... And losing that $300 + dollars at the airport did make a big dent in my budget for the first month or so before I get my first pay ... Just be aware of the possibility that it could happen to you if you are flying from anywhere other than North America ... The cost was $30 per Kilo ... The calcuation seems to start from 25kg ... So there are around 5 "free" kilos but maybe not any more ... The previous time I had flown from Sydney to Incheon on Asiana I had to pay for 3kg excess baggage (for weight around 28kg) |

I'm flying from the US, and I know what the fines are (they're rather low, actually).
What I'm hoping is more to see how big/heavy most people's luggage was. |

Huh? They fined you once, and the next time you packed even heavier, and were fined even more? |

No, the first time was accidental but I also don't see it as a fine ... Though this time I didn't think it was as heavy as it was ... This time around I did include a couple of things that I hadn't included the first time ... but knew that I would either need soon after I arrived or would find it hard to get here or at greater cost than the baggage cost ... And I did weigh it up against the cost of postage (Australia has no surface mail option to Korea) or literally buying the things here ... But given the fact that I have used most of the things I brought with me in the 3.5 weeks I have been here I am not sorry that I have included anything in my baggage ... I did not include books because I know that I can buy what I want cheaper than including them ... And I do think that if I did it again I would include all that I included ... While you think that I am stupid for "getting fined" I don't see it that way .... I know that I am here for at least a year and very likely for the long term ... Once I get through the pain of not having that money ... and have money I will also be grateful for what it has meant this time to my adjustment back into Korea ... Because I need to eat as cheaply as possible ... but be healthy at the same time I have other than breakfast consistently eaten healthy Korean food at the cheap Korean restaurants around where I live and got much more comfortable in restaurants ordering food than I did in my first time in Korea ... I think that it is probably setting the stage for how I will eat most of the time even after I get paid ... because it is basically healthy cheap food and finishing work at 6 or 6:30 during the week I don't really feel like cooking and can easily stop at any number of places on my way home and eat good healthy food cheaply .. I think without the need to do it I probably would have ignored the cheaper restaurants not because I was afraid of the food but because there are only Hangul menus and I tended to take the easy way out and avoid such restaurants because I didn't feel confident enough to go into them. But the wonders of spending $3.50 to $5 for a good healthy meal is too good to ignore ... and one in particular gives me meals for $5 which I would be happy to pay much more for ... so great quality as well ...

The fee you pay for a third bag is cheaper than any US Mail option available these days. |

Sorry for the mistake. There are a bunch of different numbers and I got confused. All that I did was use a regular weight scale, weigh myself first, and then pick up the suitcase and weigh myself again. Subtract your weight and you will know the weight of the bags (just like weighing a pet).
The weight really depends on what you are sending over and it can be quite easy having more than the allowed maximum. I packed as if Korea didn't have a single store around (peanut butter is everywhere here, you don't need to bring any). If you get to the airline ticket counter very early they will be more likely to give you time to switch around stuff in your bags if they are too heavy. One ticket agent even allowed one of my bags to be one pound (0.5kg) overweight. If you are maxed out on your checked bags, just put them in your carry-on or your briefcase/laptop.
Just make sure you are familiar with the different weights of your bags and you will have a better chance of refutting anybody who tries to jerk you around. |
