Is this a typical advertisement from CDI. I can't seem to find anything on "April English". They also have a different website from the standard CDI site. They list 3 weeks vacation and NO WEEKENDS. I've read that it is pretty standard for CDI to only have about 7 days vacation along with occasional weekend work. Any information is appreciated.

i worked at cdi in busan and i know one of the teachers at cdi april english. april english is cdi, but for kindie, so you have to be able to handle the kindie. they do give you more vacation, but what they don't say is that they're set vacation. its basically one week during summer vacation, one week during winter vacation and i think one week at the end of your contract. you don't get to choose when to take your vacation. the only other thing is that they just started april english, so they had the teachers come in and do a lot of prep work like creating props for the class and what not. i'm not sure what is like now, though. |

In my humble opinion, the employer should pay for the ticket. That is standard in Korea. |

CDI seems popular with parents of elite students, so I'd guess it's crap for teachers. That's usually how it works. Picky demanding bosses pleasing all their customers. Sure it's generalizing, but I'm going to anyway. |

I work at April English in Suwon. As someone already pointed out, you basically don't have any vacation. The days are set for you, and are therefore completly worthless:
"Hey, Friend! Want to come visit me in Korea?"
"Yeah, sure."
"OK, come on Tuesday July 27 at 1 pm, concorse B of Gimpo airport."
"Oh, I have a dentist appointment on that particular day. Can I come on a different day?"
"No, you can't."
"Wow. That's f*cked up"
"Yeah, I know."
"Well, if I do come then, what can we do?"
"I don't know. It depends on whether or not my friends here also have vacation on the same week by some miracle. Or maybe, again by pure serrendipity, there will be a fun event happening on that particular week. Probably not, though."
"I'm hanging up now."
Also, your boss will try to pay your airfare at the end of your contract and make you come in on weekends (contrary to popular opinion, the contract does NOT guarantee no weekends), but both can be avoided with a hardy "You must be crazy." |

CDI is now WORSE in terms of pay/benefits/conditions than your average hogwon.
Don't work there. There are so many other better hogwons out there. Poly and YES come to mind. |

Does everyone at the school take the same vacation days or at least all of the FT's? Which airfare do they try to pay at the end, your flight to korea or out of? Thanks a lot. |

Hagwons
It would be a good idea to e-mail the following questions to more than two foreign teachers who are currently working at the school and one past employee. If you speak to a teacher over the telephone, theres a good chance the employer may be listening to the telephone conversation.
Working Hours
( 1 ) What are your working hours?
( 2 ) When do you prepare for your classes?
( 3 ) How long do you prepare for your classes?
( 4 ) How long are your breaks?
( 5 ) Does your employer allow you to use your breaks freely?
( 6 ) How many classes do you teach per day?
( 7 ) How much time do you spend teaching per class?
( 8 ) What hours do you work during the summer vacation, winter vacation, and weekends?
Job Duties
( 1 ) What job duties do you perform that are not written in your contract?
( 2 ) How often do you perform the above duties?
Wages & Overtime Wages
( 1 ) Does your employer always pay overtime wages?
( 2 ) Does your employer pay your wages in cash or deposit your wages into your Korean bank account?
( 3 ) How does your employer calculate overtime wages?
Pay receipt
( 1 ) Does your employer provide pay receipts that clearly state the date of pay, pay period dates, overtime wages earned, monthly salary including deductions from your monthly salary for ( i ) pension, ( ii ) income tax and ( iii ) health insurance?
Health Insurance
( 1 ) Has your employer provided you with a health insurance card?
( 2 ) Does your employer pay contributions for both parties to the National Health Insurance Corporation?
( 3 ) Does your employer respect your right to medical privacy?
Pension
( 1 ) Does your employer pay into the Korean Pension Plan?
Income Taxes
( 1 ) Does your employer always deduct the correct amount for income taxes from your monthly salary?
( 2 ) Does your employer pay deductions from your monthly salary for income taxes to the tax office?
Severance Pay
( 1 ) Does your employer always pay severance pay upon completion of the contract?
Living Conditions
( 1 ) Was your apartment clean upon arrival?
( 2 ) Were you provided with all the furnishings as stated in your contract?
( 3 ) Were all the furnishings/appliances in working order when you moved into your apartment?
( 4 ) Are the bills in your name or your employer's name?
( 5 ) If the bills are in your employer's name, does your employer deduct the correct amount from your monthly salary for utilities?
( 6 ) Does your employer respect your right to privacy?
Paid Annual Leave
( 1 ) When and how do you use your paid annual leave?
Dismissal
( 1 ) Does your employer have a reputation of dismissing teachers for the sole purpose of not paying them last months wages, airfare and severance pay?
Financial
( 1 ) Is the school in financial trouble?
Discipline Methods
( 1 ) Is your employer abusive towards students?
( 2 ) Is your employer abusive towards teachers?
Paid Sick Leave
( 1 ) Have you used a paid sick leave day?
( 2 ) If yes to ( 1 ), how did your employer react?
( 3 ) If teachers use a day of paid sick leave, does your employer require them to work another day to make up for the hours missed?
Students/Teachers

They pay for your flight into and out of korea. They reimburse you for your ticket to korea once you pass the training and they will either buy you a ticket to go home or give you cash if you want to do some traveling. From what I heard, all the teachers at CDI April English take their vacation at the same time during the winter and summer vacation because the students are on vacation during that time. |
