I have to get some hanboks home and they're in such big boxes, I finally just said screw it and bought a third piece of checked luggage. I'll just pay the damn fee for a third piece as I don't want to ship them surface.

Most American carriers allow 2 check ins at 62 (L+H+W) and 50 lbs. If you go to your local Fedex store or UPS they will weigh it for you.

I work for a large manufacuter and I weighed my boxes in the shippiing dept and we also get 70% off Fed-Ex and to ship a box that is 20/20/20 and weighs 50 lbs it would cost me $198 (that is with the discount) and economy. It is better to just pay the airline for an extra bag.

Hey OP is you flight next Friday? If so, I am on the same flight most likely.

I assume you are shipping hanbok from Korea to another country, right? In that case, there are still some inexpensive shipping options out of Korea. And hanbok are light!

Yeah, bringing them from here to back home. Thing is, I can get extra luggage and pay the fee and have enough room to also pack books or I can ship the hanboks and books separately. Since I NEED these books (and would thus need to do air mail), it turns out that the extra luggage fee ends up being a bit cheaper.

Books + hanbok, I can totally see an extra suitcase.

How much, via surface mail, does it cost to mail, say, a 50lb box back to the US?

If you lived in London you could always get the ferry to Japan, ferry to china then the train back to London.

Not sure if you would save much but if you trained yourself up before hand you could easily carry 2 20kg bags and a separate day bag.

You would have to move to the UK though.

20 kilos = 44 lbs. for 48k won (surface mail) back to the states.

Much more for air.

One little piece of advice for your checked bags: use colored tape on the outside. I bought some red tape and wrapped it around my two checked bags. When I came off the plane I could easily spot my bags from 100 meters away. They may look weird, but every damn checked bag looks the same when you arrive at Incheon Airport.

I flew Korean airlines

I got nearly 53 kg on a 20 kg limit..
I brought the entire set of wildlife encyclopiadias (40 books)

Put your heavy stuff in a carry on bag.. ie. your encyclopedias

then put some light stuff in a couple other plastic shopping bags..

check in exactly 22 kg.. nothing more..

leave..

after 20 minutes come back and check the 2 other plastic bags in, saying they wont let you carry it in.. (which was true)

What's been other peoples experience regarding surface shipping to the U.S. here?

I went to the post office today and they told me it wasn't available to the U.S. anymore. Wanted me to pay 96,000 won for about 9 kg heh.
