Just curious why people are still applying to and working for EPIK? |
The 28 days contracted vacation did it for me. |

When is the usual applicant deadline for September?
If you apply in early August but are out of your home country and can't get the visa/CRC until right before the contract would start, would they hire you? |

Because it pays better than GEPIK and SMOE. |
Are you sure about this? I just got offered a job at SMOE and they are paying more than an EPIK teacher I know. It may have to do with experience though. |
If they don't have experience and you do, of course you are going to get better pay... the same person applying for both jobs would get more from EPIK. |
Out of curiosity I looked up the pay scales. Mainly because I'll start working for SMOE in August and want the best deal I can get. They look about the same to me at least as far as my credentials are concerned.
Here are links to the pay scales if anyone is interested.

EPIK is easier to pronounce.
You won't cause a snigger when you ask for an EPIK job.
Is it GEPIK or JEPIK?
I never know.
And as for SMOE....do we say the letters or is it pronounced SMO?
Best apply for EPIK. Just to be safe. |
My recruiter today pronounced SMOE in individual letters:
Es-em-oh-ee.
Maybe that's the way? |

If you're in Korea push for a school you can actually visit before signing a contract. Then you can find out what the attitude of the adminstration and KETs is towards foreign teachers, if anything smells fishy, what their expectations of an FT are, if the students seem pleasant or swear up a storm in the corridors, what their schedule's like, etc. |

Wow, all this advice is a little overwhelming, but encouraging!
My next question has to do with leaving my hagwon earlier. I've been looking on this forum, and I'm getting confused. Am I ALLOWED to leave my contract early? I thought with the the E2 visa requirements that I wouldn't get a new job if I did... because we're totally willing to leave our hagwon early if we know we can get a new visa.
Thanks! |

If you land a public school job in your city, chances are your hagwon won't put up much of a fight. The board of education holds a lot of weight. |

So you're getting 2.0 instead of the usual 1.8? |

Who do you contact for SMOE positions? The SMOE site just looks like a general website about the education system in Seoul. I don't see any direct link to teaching English as a foreigner. |

With EPIK I got 2.2 with NO experience and the bare minimum credentials. (A BA in anything.)
They have since lowered the starting salary. |

I applied and interviewed directly and cut out the fat by not going through a recruiter with one of the big 3 PS systems resently (I am already in Korea, though). I got a contract offer immediately after the PS system checked my references for an August start date at a salary that is quite reasonable based on my qualifications . |
