There's a poster on this board who's a certified Dive Master and runs his own dive outfit out of Daejeon. I think he organizes shark dives down in Pusan as well. His name here is "diver" I think. He's a Canadian guy. |

This is the best diving place in Korea. The owner (Russ) is an awesome guy and his diving tours are unbeatable.

Yeah, this guy is nice. I've dove with him also. |

The above site has all of the info I know at the moment that might be relevant to foreign divers in Korea.
Without knowing your location, it would be hard to give you specific advice, but there are foreign-run clubs/shops in Seoul, Suwon, Osan, Daejeon, Daegu and Seogwipo (Jeju). All are run by instructor level or higher (thanks for the plug Jarome...but I am actually a master scuba diver trainer which is a couple of steps higher than dive master )
The diving on Jeju, especially Seogwipo, is GREAT. The vis is sometimes not great, but the variety of coral and marine life matches anything I have seen while diving all over the Philippines or Thailand. Novice divers sometimes knock the diving on Jeju because the conditions there are a little difficult for them, but the diving is very, very good. Check out my diving photo gallery here: ttp://scubainkorea.com/Gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=327
If you are in the BUsan area, there are no foreign clubs/shops that I know of, but you may check out EZ Divers 019-544-8394. I have heard good things about them.

You won't see much but mud around korea. If you are learning, that's cool. But if you are P.A.D.I. certified and want to see some killer reefs, head to the phillipines. |

So, how many dives do you have in Korea? I only have 500 or so, but I hope to bump that number up a little this summer.
All of these photos are from Korea. No mud in sight. As I mentioned, a lot of beginner divers like to dump on Korean diving, but it's usually because they aren't yet skilled enough to handle the more challenging conditions that Korean diving can throw at you (colder, a little darker). However, you also get some great warm water, good vis days as well. There is something for everyone if you look for it, or ask people who actually have some experience diving in Korea.

The few dives I have done around Seogwipo were, like I said, not the greatest, but not bad. There were a few nudibranch, lionfish, an octopus, but other than that.....just rocks. It was a very easy dive and had fairly good vis.
That said, there were a few divers with no experience with me on the dive so it is possible I just haven't been to any decent dive sites.
I'm looking to get out a bunch this summer here (no time to venture around the S. Pacific).
Maybe see ya out there!!!
Edit: Any know of good drift dives in Korea?? Big fish hangouts?? |

I don't know of any good "big fish" hangouts in Korea. There have been sharks sighted around Jeju, but it is very rare (they have also pulled great whites out of the water in the same area, though no divers I know have ever seen one).
A great drift dive in Seogwipo is to jump just at the mouth of the cove on Big Munsom Island. The ebb tide will carry you along the wall on the front (north side) of Big Munsom, past the submarine (if you're lucky...don't forget to wave at the passengers), across the channel that runs between Big and Little Munsom (out at around the 20-22 meter mark - the drop off; this is where you will find the clownfish), follow the 22 meter line all around the drop off and it will carry you right up against the north tip of Little Munsom, then around and down the east side of Little Munsom. The east side is the beautiful wall covered with soft corals all the way from the surface down to about 40 meters or so...every square centimeter is covered. It is one of the most beautiful things I've seen underwater. If you have a good current, you'll travel a good long way.
If you talk to Russ at www.deepbluequest.com, he can tell you about some wreck diving up off the east coast.
I have had some good dives off of Sangju (Namhae) and I would love to get out to Gomundo (South Sea). |
