One interesting twist, I never realized, is that hagwons are now making deals with public schools. I guess this helps them get students after school. So, they offer up their teachers to the public school.
This works against the teacher. Hagwons are not that bad, but you have to make sure they don't take advantage of you. |

I did this in Gumi city last year. 800,000 per month bonus for nine classes a week...I could live with that.
Public school pros---accurate payment, accurate tax deductions, lesson planning (can be a con for an unexperienced teacher, or for an overly demanding or unqualified co-teacher)...longer vacations
Hagwon pros---accurate payment at good schools...personally, two hagwons into Korea...I've never had a problem....smaller/higher ability classes....afternoon/evening working hours (I'm not an early riser).....less down time (I've heard way too many people on Dave's say they have too much time on their hands during the day...the busier you are...the quicker your time will go in Korea)...more personal relationship with students/seeing them grow and develop because of your instruction.
The negatives of both are numerous...and there are plenty of threads here on Dave's to learn more about the hagwon horror stories...and the public school horror stories as well.
My advice...do your research...talk to foreign teachers currently working at the school...don't accept the first contract that comes your way...chances are it's crap.

Every now and again I think it would be nice to be able to wake up in the middle of the day and go home as soon as my classes are finished. Then I remember the insane amount of holidays I'd miss out on , the travel opportunities , the extra lessons I'd have to prepare , the difficulties of working for a profit making institution rather than a public one etc. Whilst on mornings like this when I've only gotten a few hours sleep it's hard to remember why , but I'd never work for a hogwan.
Apart from the already long holidays , there are so many weeks/days off for exams , field trips , special school activities (sports days , tests).Even at the most mundane times , I've hardly had one full week of work in 10 months. |
