Hello all,
I am going to Fukouka in June and I have searched a few websites but was wondering if any of you had some good places that you could mention.
Cheers

You don't mention what kind of places you're interested in. If it's bars/clubs then I can't help you.
Other stuff: there's a nice park there - can't remember what it's called but if you're on your way back from the embassy (assuming you're doing a visa run) to the central part of the city you'll almost certainly see it. It's pretty big - huge lake with an island in the middle that can be reached over a footbridge. There's a Japanese garden on the island.
Then there is the Foukuoka baseball stadium right near the embassy. It has some kind of museum or something (never actually went in).
There is a big tower you can go up to enjoy the view. Can't remember it's proper name (not being very helpful with names, am I?) but from the area around the K-embassy you can see it easily.
Canal City shopping mall is worth a visit just for a look around, although you'll quickly tire of it.
Enjoy! I like the place very much. Small enough that you can walk around fairly easily. Big enough that it has things to do. And clean.
Also ask the tourist information counter at the airport for a tourist information leaflet and a map. They'll recommend some places. |

Tenjin-Machi is a downtown area with lots of funky little hole in the wall bars, and a few cheap-ish hotels (70 bucks a night or so).
The Fukuoka castle is cool and it's near the art gallery, which is good. It's a walk from the Consulate.
If you need internet look for a place called 'Cybac.' Get a membership card and you can use it like a PC bang. Internet cafes are not the same over there, and not so common as they are here. |

Hello Cangel,
What are the best places to go in regards to sightseeing and the best bar locations, I heard Tenjin is a good area?
Just checked that website, it`s much better than some of the Korean websites I`ve seen like pusanweb, layout and design are quality. |

The are numerous temples within walking distance of the city center (Tenjin). The best temple, Dazaifu Tenmangu, is a short 30-minute train ride to Dazaifu. Dazaifu is also the location of one of the Japan National Museums. Also check out Fukuoka Castle for a little culture.
When you get into town, pick up a current copy of Fukuoka Now, a free monthly magazine. These can be found at int. organizations like Rainbow Plaza in the IMS Building in Tenjin. This mag will have all the expat bars, clubs etc listed. It also has a monthly events calendar. Most foreigner bars are located in Tenjin around Oyafuko-dori (map with location in the mag).
I also suggest getting single day subway pass for Y600. |

I personally dare you to wake up before 8am in the morning during your stay there.......I know itn is physically impossible.............but if you do, you will see the magnificant sight of handicapped volunteers walking the sidewalk picking up trash and then you might catch a glimpse of some housewives pushing their children in things that look like playpens (literally!) down the sidewalk..................It is just like a Monty Python skit.................truly unbelievable |

Fukuoka does have sento (hot bath). The newest one is located at Hawk's Town (spa). This sento gets its geo-thermal hot water from deep beneath the spa. This place is a tad pricey. I recommend getting out of town and visiting Beppu. You can easily get there via highway bus from Tenjin. Also check out the various travel agents located everywhere as they always have onsen packages for reasonable prices. Both Nishitetsu bus and JR (train) have travel branches that always offer such tours. |

Thanks. Having lived there for so long and with frequent trips back, I should be capable of answering most questions.
John Candy was a comedic genius. One of my favorites of all time. |
