I get the rural allowance and I LIVE in Bundang (about a 5 minute walk to Seohyun station) BUT I have a 20 minute commute to work in the morning and again after work. My school (even though it has 1000 students) is classed as rural.

I am also about 30 minutes away from Itaewon, Jamsil or Sadang by seat bus on the expressway.

There are lots of openings in the PS system - heck, our district is still looking to fill 4 positions that GEPIK couldn't fill because of the shortfall in recruitment over the new E2 paperwork.

Just curious why people are still applying to and working for EPIK?

Because it pays better than GEPIK and SMOE.

It's also for people who have no interest in being anywhere near the horrible hole that is Seoul.

How do you calculate that salaries are lower?

Base salary for a fresh off the boat newbie with a non-related degree and no experience = 2 mil for 22 classes of 40 minutes (880 contact minutes per week). Compare that to the average haggie at 30 classes of 50 minutes (1500 contact minutes per week).

ADD 20k for each additional class (to a maximum of 28 ) = up to 2.7 mil + medical, pension, airfare, housing and a minimum of 3 CALENDAR weeks of holidays. All that and it is still government office hours - home by 5.

Toss in a couple years of experience and a TESOL cert and you are up to 2.5 mil for your base pay and pulling in about 3 mil + benefits and up to 6 calendar weeks of (contracted) PAID holidays per year (plus the usual run of extra days off) after you add in the extra afternoon classes (and you still get home by 5pm.

Your basic haggie pays between 2.0 and 2.2 for a fresh off the boat newbie and works them for 30 classes per week (50-60 minutes each) and usually skips out on the medical and pension benefits and if you are lucky you get 10 days of annual vacation.

Me thinks you are like most newbies and only look at the first number you see on the contract and don't bother with the rest of the contract, terms or options that are available to you.

After you spend your 1st year here getting your feet wet you will have a much better idea of how the system works and how to make it work for you.
