We all know about Bill Kapoun, Matthew Sellers and Jamie Penich. Now Mike White is added to the list. How many others have there been. Without proper police reporting, news coverage, or statistics gathering... how do we know but from personal experience of knowing a victim.

Let's pool our brain powers and figure out who, what, when, where & why of foreign victims in Korea. Wonder if we will see a pattern?

also include the strange rise in bride deaths you might know of in your neighborhood...

Personally I dont know a single foreign victim of crime here, let alone violent crime.

I know two guys who died in my town last year, both of natural causes. I also know people who have been the victims of theft ad assault.

Rape and attempted sexual assault are quite common here. But they're quite common in every country.

Read up on the Korean war. That will give you an estimate of how many foreigners died in Korea.

There should be a none of the above option, I think most people would chose it.

I'm a victim of assault. A creep followed me into my building in February and tried to rape me. I used any tactic I could think of to get him to loosen his grip on me, and when he did, I started screaming help me in Korean and kicking the metal stairwell to make noise and he ran off, thankfully.

low crime rates was initially WHY I wanted to raise my son in Korea. It would be highly unlikely anyone would had him a crack pipe or force him to join a gang.

These low crime rates can lull us into a false sense of security. When there is a crisis, the sad fact is, very few ppl are willing to help. Yes, its true that bystander syndrom happens around the world, but here it seems to be cultrally condoned rather than condemed.

I revised the poll to include those who didn't know anyone personally who died or was a victim of assault or what have you. I hope you don't mind the revision. I am not saying if I knew someone who became a victim.
I do feel for the families who have suffered. We do know that crime touches us all.

In North America, people are generally more outraged about crime unless it happens in the inner city. As far as assault, there is a huge problem with that with North American men having a serious problem with their masculinity and engaging in violence against women, and it is said 1/4th of all American will have been assaulted once in their lives. That is very sad. As far as Mike White, he is a victim of a society not being interested in protecting people enough and having places of business held responsible for having safety rules at their establishments. This is not because he was a Caucasian child. A child committed suicide at a Korean school a friend taught at, and the faculty and principal there wanted to act as if the child never took her life.
