Korea has a higher murder rate than Canada and all other English countries except for the USA. What low crime rates are you guys talking about?

I chose those countries because that's where all of us are from. Yet most people wouldn't be surprised to hear of murder back home. Okay guy?

I see FUBAR removed his post. I guess he's not calling bullshit on it anymore, but instead actually checked stats.

That's interesting - didn't know that. How about other crimes? Murder is obviously a biggie but what about the other crimes mentioned in the poll?

I've always thought the overall crime rate was pretty low in South Korea, although that's just what I've heard on the street, I've nothing to back that up with. Might need to rethink that. Although the crime rate depends on much more than just murder stats of course.

The only place in Korea that I've ever felt like I needed to carry a weapon is in Itaewon. Even then, I would feel safe with a pocket knife.

Back in the US, I could nice at LEAST 20 neighborhoods in my home city where I could get shot and killed for just looking at someone the wrong way. I lived in Richmond, Va by the way. I wouldn't feel safe unless I was in an armored Humvee with a 50 cal turret. Lets see:

Gilpin Court, Jackson Ward, Church Hill, Ginter Park, the entire East side of Henrico County, Southern Chesterfield county by the trailer parks, Shockoe Bottom, etc....etc....

Don't even get me started in BIG cities like NYC, LA, ATL.

Let's pool our brain powers and figure out who, what, when, where & why of foreign victims in Korea. Wonder if we will see a pattern?

I know of two who comitted suicide while here. One was a former co-worker and did it after we both left the same company (Pagoda). Another did it hours after we walked back from night classes together (uni).

Also, another former co-worker (from the same uni) was almost murdered last year in his apartment.

I am sure they are much lower. However, I don't trust Korean stats when it comes to assault because many will get settled with blood money so won't get reported. I have had two friends here assaulted and one was settled with blood money so wasn't reported and in the other case, the police refused to make a report because they said they didn't believe him.

I am pretty sure rape stats would be skewed as well because plain and simple, they don't go to the police because they will get blamed by the police, or the judge will find it not to be rape because she was wearing jeans.

It's harder to fudge murder stats because you can't really hide a dead body, although you could always blame it on a fan.

Could you provide some details? How and why did they do it?

My apartment in Seoul was robbed. The thieves took about 700,000 won in cash and all of my wifes jewelry.

The police did give us tangerines though!

Does not being paid count as theft?

As I have never been a victim of crime in my home country (knock on wood), I have been robbed far more here in Korea than home.
