Do Americans have to start paying American Income Tax after working 2 years in Korea?
My father swears he saw this somewhere. |

I was under the impression that Americans could earn up to $70,000 US before having to pay taxes. I haven't heard of any 2 year limit. I have American friends and this is the information they have told me. |

We don't have to pay, but we have to file. I suggest you contact H & R Block. I saw an ad from them in the Korea Herald. |

Even though you don't have to pay taxes, you should definitely file. I filed each time for the past 3 years. My friend didn't file in the 2 years he was here and when he went home he got a letter from the IRS tht he would be audited and he ended up having to pay a big fine.
Also, if you plan to marry a Korean, one of the zillion documents you have to present is your tax return for the previous 3 years. (I'm not married, but I read this).

I've been filing. Got $1000 return last year, due to my work back home before coming here.
Thanks for the info! |

You never have to pay any U.S. taxes, if your income doesn't exceed $70,000 per year but you must file every year.
The first 2 years in Korea, depending on where you work, you don't have to pay Korean income tax. After 2 years though, you must pay Korean income tax. |
