I found this buried on some thread about calling internationally, so I thought I would bring it to the forefront.

You can dial 1544-0044. Wait for the announcement and then dial the country code, the area code and the phone number.

You ONLY pay for the cost of your cell phone minutes (or land line minutes).

I called all my friends and family last Sunday. Worked like a charm. Got a cell phone text message today thanking me for using the service!

Hope this will help some folks.

Did you find a way to confirm the cost? Just wondering.

Well, the confirmation I got was when I checked my cell phone minutes. They were decreased by the number of minutes I talked.

Are you on prepaid service or something? I tried something similar on my plan (dialing 00700) and got charged about 60cents/minute.

Were the minutes equal? Or did it charge you MORE minutes than a regular Korean domestic call?

I find it suspicious that you can make an international call and it just comes out of your minutes.

I would wait and make sure some place doesn't send you a bill later.

I tried this on a normal cell phone plan...

It ended up being very expensive ($115 for a month) where as 007 was only $90 for the same amount of time.

I'm planning on using www.ip-relay.com to talk to people at home. Totally free and it's fun to mess with the operators.

There have been several answers to my question! Does the 1544-0044 number charge more than the minutes to your cell phone? Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks.

You are really an asshole, unless of course your people at home are deaf.

I had my girlfriend translate this page for me, and she confirms... You can call ANY numbner in the USA, Canada, Hong Kong, China, and Singapore FOR THE SAME COST as if I was calling my buddy in Seoul.

You can all call landlines ONLY in the UK, Ireland, and Oz, as well as a host of non-English speaking countries. (South Africans and New Zealandites are sadly left out of this scheme entirely) I call my friends and family in New York all the time, and my cell phone bills average about 40-60/month.

To all those non-believers: get a Korean to go to the above website for you, and check it out!!!

To those who use pre-paid cell phones: STOP THE INSANITY!!! Even if you can't find a Korean to sign you up for a plan, you CAN go to LG and get your own, as long as you're a legal teacher and you have a Korean bank account.
Some LG clerks don't like to help you (When I asked the clerk, he told me no, I couldn't so I just walked over to his desk and sat down like a spoiled brat, giving him a death stare, until he called his boss who told him otherwise).. but they DO have to help you. Just bring all your documents with you, including passbook.
And if you are a Public or University teacher, you can sign up for a Samsung Credit card, allowing you to then sign up with any cell phone company.
