I plan to do one, as I have really had enough w/my ps.

What is the advantage/disadvantage of doing the following:
a) at airport, leaving w/my ARC card (pretending as if it is weekend vacation w/plans to return)

b)at airport, giving the immi officer my ARC card and telling them I am leaving and to cancel my E2, since I've been wronged by my school.

btw, I do not plan to work again in Korea on an E2, however there is a small chance I might want to come in as a visitor to meet friends (not work).

since I work at a public school tied to government, if I do option b), will they try to stop me from leaving?

If I do option a), will I still be able to enter Korea later as a visitor?
I think the school/organization will cancel E2 visas for runners after they leave, but not sure.

I don't think it will make any difference if you don't plan to work in Korea again. You can just hand them your ARC and say you have to go home. If you don't have a re-entry stamp in your passport you may have to do this in any case.

Out of curiousity, why are you running from your PS job?

I too want to know which of the many complaints people have made about public school is the specific reason the OP wants to not only quit, but run. Very Happy

PS only looks like a good job when compared to the other options.

The only reason to run from a PS is to get out of paying for the plane ticket and relocation fee. It is the same as stealing.

If you are past your six month mark, put in your 30 day notice and leave like a respectable person. The school may not be treating you well, but by you running you are screwing a hell of a lot of people over (those having to cover your classes and the students to name a few).

Good point. I loathe my PS job but if I do quit I will do it "properly".

I forgot about that extra 300,000 won though. I've been seriously thinking about quitting before six months and that makes it an even harder decision!

If you are working at a public school as the school's native English instructor, not as someone provided by an outside employer for an after-school program, you should first go through the following individuals in order to address your complaints or concerns:

Problem-Resolution Chain
  • Co-teacher.
  • Department Head.
  • Vice-principal.
  • Principal.
  • School inspector over your school at the regional Office of Education.
  • Coordinator of foreign teachers at the provincial/metropolitan Office of Education.
  • Labor Board.

If you decide that you can't be bothered with that and want to leave anyway, what you should do is return the allowances mentioned above and then leave. You're also shafting anyone else who will get placed at that school in the future.

So, have you taken your concerns up the problem resolution chain or did you just keep it all bottled inside? After all, it's only the 3rd week of the 3rd month of the 1st semester. What have they done to you that's so bad you want to bail this early?

Indeed, but what about the 900,000 won they keep from your first three months.

No one can stop you from leaving Korea, you didn't murder someone did you? Immigration isn't interested in stopping disgruntled teachers fleeing Korea. They see guys like you every day. Hand over your arc ask them to cancel it and tell them it's because you job sucked.

Why are you leaving?

His post history is all about complaining to the labour board. I guess it went no where.

Also in his post history: his job sucks for the same reasons mine does. Too much "freedom" with "lesson planning". I don't think there is any way to fix it. I don't want to pay back my airfare so I'm just going to (continue to) grind it out but - I hate my job. If money were not an issue, I would quit NOW.

Oh, and my school didn't take a deposit so I don't have to worry about that.

Even if you see out your contract, you're still gonna be regarded as that waygugin bastard who didn't love the Korea enough to stay forever at the same wage. ungrateful bastards. You will be remembered as the fucker that left, the next guy will be remembered as not being as good as the last guy.

Just fuckin' run if you want to, if you're single and have lots of money go to Japan and get a job. If you don't, go to Vietnam. What real problems are you creating for the students? They see you for 40-55 mins once a week. Obviously you're indispensable Rolling Eyes , if that's true why can nobody say your fuckin' name correctly?

Go up the chain and address your problems. Maybe you can even request to get transferred to a different school.

Running makes it harder on the rest of us.

Who gives a shit, just go. Don't listen to these people about you being selfish. You are not REALLY hurting anyone. Certainly not the kids. So some teachers have to cover some extra classes. Booo hoo hooo. Seriously, there's a lot worse that you could do. This is a business. They know that when they sign you on that you can run at any time. You are an investment for them. And just like any other investment, you are a risk. Well, they invested poorly. That's life. Besides, odds are
none of the Koreans who you work with truly accept you. Everything at my school, at least, is for face value.

well, though I agree people have a right to be "selfish" (no one else is going to look out for your ass) I also think there is such a thing as behaving "professionally", even if you're not a proper teacher and don't consider yourself such.

You're at a salary level far beyond a McDonald's worker, or a pizza delivery boy or some salesclerk at a retail store.. I believe there are certain "professional guidelines" if you have matured into being an adult, so I'd give my notice even at those US "shit jobs" as well.

If there isn't a big financial hit/difference from giving proper notice vs just "running", why would you "run"? The school is somewhat covered financially for the allowance fee, etc by the 900K deposit they take out for your appt that you don't receive back until the end of your contract.

Surely there is an "honorable" way for you to resign with dignity.

anyways, I wish you the best.

and I'll also say that it makes me even happier that I happened to luck into a school where I have been greeted with nothing but kindness. (even though I also have my gripes about the "laissez faire" lessong planning with no backup/assistance. but I'll make do.

I don't see how doing a runner hurts. It opens a spot for someone else to work at. If it was a good school, then the teacher who left either had enough of it or they made a mistake. If it wasn't a good school, then that should send a clear message to the other teachers. Maybe they should do the same.

This is like the saying "If you don't vote, you can't complain". I see it the other way around. If you stay at a bad school, you are actually hurting everyone else by supporting a faulty system.

True, and if you stay you are depriving yourself of a school elsewhere that needs you and you would enjoy working at.

Good points. This doesn't change the fact the OP should give a month's notice and walk away head held high, rather than sneak away like a thief in the night. (In the case of a sleazy hagwon, I'd be the first to recommend a runner...)
