[Are they the lemmings]

Thanks all. It's reassuring to know that our cat is not doolally.

Just to be sure: Does this kind of behaviour subside, or is it an ongoing thing? I mean, should I be worried if the cat is still doing it in a year or two?

Buy a laser pointer, aim for the floor and watch the little bugger go nuts. I don't have any cats (allergies) but I've seen how crazy the little red dot can make them...it's a blast.

yeah, i've had a ton of cats in my life, it's totally normal . . . like the in heat thing will be totally different, like screaming and screaming to get outside, usually done by the door or window . . . i don't know what it is, but (like others) i think it's an exercise thing, but whatever, don't worry, don't change anything or feel scared--everything is fine with the cat, it means you're doing a good job!!! I would be concerned if the cat wasn't doing it!

it almost reminds me of my Asian friends who were scared the first time they heard their cat purring . . . like they thought it was having a seizure of something!!! I had to be like, "No, Shruti, it's fine--purring means it's happy!!!" They had no idea, it was cute . . . and so crazy!!! I didn't think anyone could not know that . . . until I met some people in the Philippines like that too!!!

The fact that it was purring was a good sign; the fact that it's going "psycho-dynamic" (as we used to call it) is a good sign--it means it's healthy!!!

Glad the guy (or girl, sorry) has such good, conscientous owners

The laser pointers make wonderful cat toys (never point or allow it to shine directly in the eyes of the cat) You sit on the sofa, directing the light around, up a wall, over the sofa...the cat tries to catch it. They love them.

Good. So our cat's fine.

I must say, it needs the exercise, too. When we got it, we took it to the vet to give it a once-over, and the vet said, "It's too fat! What have you been feeding it?!"

I guess the lady who rescued it from the street took a bit too much pity on it and gave it free reign with the cat food supply

It started running everywhere and up the wall.

get a laser pointer...sold on the subway by random dudes for 1000 a pop.

My cat goes nuts chasing the laser round the house, easy way to tire her out and then she's goes for a poo, eats and then sleeps for about 7 hours.

She won't grow out of it. My mother's arthritic, three pound, blind and deaf, 21 year old cat STILL gets "the zips." Even the kittens steer clear of her...
