Booze for the boss, preferably top shelf. Screw the recruiter. Your coming over is making him/her a bundle.

the recruiter gets about 2 grand for you coming over, sending e-mails is free so they made a clean profit.

Buy the boss some whiskey / brandy....even if they don't like it it's still a gift and starts you off looking like a good guy!!

I'd say 'bring a sample of what your town is famous for.' Being from Florida, you should bring blow, guns, rich old Jewish people from New Jersey, crappy ballot machines, Jeb Bush, and alligators. Or maybe one of those cool hover boats...
No, seriously though, stuff from your hometown is good--pretty calendars and touristy stuff, or of course, duty free booze. Maybe a tropical booze--what do you guys favour? Rum, perhaps?

I'm from Texas so I gave my manager a lucky horseshoe (new and clean) and I gave the other teachers various Texas-related keychains.

45 colt or pump action shotty would have been more authentic.

Kinda wanted to make it through the airport without getting tackled though, I was already two days late as it was.

as a floridian i must admit those were pretty funny responses....especially like the ballot machine!!

nolegirl: you're already a step ahead by thinking of bringing a gift. your school will be appreciative of anything you bring them. posts are right: those cheesy 'Florida' souvenirs that we despise back home make perfect gifts for teachers at your new school, i.e. key chains, hats, etc.

classy Smile

When I went to Japan on vacation I brought all my co-teachers souveniers. It was a real pity I got sent without notice to another school before I could give them their gifts, they obviously didn't get my post cards from the Yasukuni shrine. I was also disappointed that Japanese flag i bought was going to go to waste as my new school didn't have a special "international english zone" to decorate.

Seriously though. Booze is great for the head honcho's, something small (and touristy) for the co-teachers. If you are at a small school with one co-teacher/minder you might want to get her something nice as she is almost certainly the most important cog in you having a smooth experience.

Wow, thanks for the responses. Yeah, I guess I'll jost go to a souvenier store or something and then get a bottle of liqueor.

My recruiter is helping me find housing and stuff. He really is so cute. It was really funny b/c I gave him a list of places I wanted to live and so he sent back a little description of each location and he put under Sincheon
"thats where the ESL male teachers live (the lady killers)." And he always tries to use Englsih slang and it really is so cute. So I'll get him a little something.

Is it wierd that I am staying at the owners house til I find housing. I am a tad bit freaked out about this?

Good stuff! I'm from Florida and that just gives me some memories to keep me going until I go home for summer break for the first time in a couple of years.

As far as the gifts go, I didn't bring squat for anybody. I feel pretty good about it too, because I have received little in terms of appreciation for working my a$$ off for my school. Don't feel like it is necessary or that will get you brownie points. If you just like doing those kinds of things, then great. Do like others mentioned and bring some of our "cheesy" Florida souveniers.

That is too strange for me and a red flag in my opinion. Your owner can't work out suitable housing before you arrive? Maybe it's just me, but I would never do that. Good luck!
