Could you provide some details? How and why did they do it?

The first co-worker I have no details other than his death by suicide. I was just told in passing by another ex-co-worker I had bumped into on the street. Sort of a "Didja hear _____ killed himself a few months ago?... Nice seeing you again, gotta go."

The second case was strange. I had three HS friends kill themselves and 2 more in uni, so I know the signs of suicidal distress. My uni co-worker here displayed NONE of them. We even made plans to go up to Seoul on the weekend (2 days hence) to do some shopping he needed to get done. He was a newb and I was still showing him the ropes. We went our separate ways around 930, and apparantly I was the last one to see/speak to him alive. When he didn't show up for work the next morning, they went to his apartment and discovered him hanging from the shower fixture in the bathroom. We found records of a chat session to (we assume) his girlfriend in Thailand around the 1am mark, so something in that chat may have been what sparked his final decision.

I talked to his brother (in the UK) the next day and tried to tell him there was no way to know he was going to do that, but he was hearing none of it.

Jesus! What town was that? Was it in the south? I lived in Bangkok for 2 years and felt just as safe as I do in Seoul.

A friend of mine has had a drunken ajjoshi come up to him twice in the same 7-11 poking him in the chest and giving the George-ee Bush-ee rant. But that's just funny I guess.

I was 45km east of Bangkok in a different province.. Then even Bangkok has areas that gangs fight and you really shouldn't be wandering around on your own.

Much like life in Seoul and the country there is Bangkok then the provinces.

A lot more is going on out there than meets the eye. Motorcycle gangs shooting at each other in restaurants. Attacking each other with machetes.
Every year the local fair would be there - 7 days of kids killing each other. Record was 15 in one year. Police go in firing guns into the air.

Then of course you have the police making people disappear. never heard of it happening to foreigners (not yet anyway).

Then you have the Mowlam concerts. Sure Spliff can fill you in on the fighting at them.

There's a movie that sometimes comes on in Korea. It has high speed chases on tuk tuks going off the sides of cliffs. Lot's of ultra violence.
Have you read Private Dancer yet?

No, they just shoot them in the back and leave them in the street.

Overall I still think Korea is quite safe, but it is not NERF safe.

Lets see I have heard of one FT jumping over a ledge in Daegu. He was with a group of friends. Drunk out of his mind. He jumped over the ledge near a river bank thinking it was only a few feet to the ground not over 30 feet. Mortally wounded later died in Hospital.

I have heard of one FT in Daegu woke up to find a k-guy in her apartment stealing money or something. Screamed bloody murder and I think he ran away. Was lucky she was not raped.

Again another in Daegu a FT (woman) was waking home about 1:00am in a quite a safe area. A random KorGuy came up and punched her in the face. She was a small girl. Do not think they tried to rape her or anything but still getting punched in the face by a random Korean is a downer.

Heard of a few suicides but no details about what happened.

The best thing to being safe in Korea is not to thing "Nah this is Korea I will not get hurt" but "This is Korea the odds are slim but lets be aware."

A friend of mine was assaulted just outside her workplace by some mentally ill dude. If he'd had a knife, she'd be dead.

I heard today a friend's ex had committed suicide.

One of my students had commited suicide, and two students got ran over at 1pm last night right here on campus. One will need extensive surgery on her face.

While i don't necessarily dissagree, is this where you're getting your stats from?

Nope, they don't have any references to where they get their stats from, or from what year. Wikipedia (yeah, I know) has a great graph with tons of links to credible sources. It is actually a bigger difference than the nationmaster sight says.

Though the stats are 8 years old.

I had a suicidal student about 10 years ago. I had no prior experience with that kind of counseling, however, I had just read a book about insect activity on corpses a few days before. I told her what would happen after she died. It was very graphic and thankfully she decided to cancel her plan.

Now she is married and has a healthy baby. I don't know if I helped but I do know that she damn near blew chow during the explanation..

You really should include an option for suicide. I know at least one that I can think of.

1 incidence of foreigner on foreigner abduction and torture I can recall is another good story from back in the day.

What about plain old serious beatings?

Too many to count. Korean(s) on foreigner(s), foreigner(s) on Korean(s).

Perhaps that is more what you are getting at.

How about times you've seen Korean men beating other Koreans both male and female into unconsciousness?

I can remember a couple of those.

You might want to go to the foreigners' cemetery in Busan and get some stories from the old guys buried there, if you can get them to talk to you. Probably some real sad ones.

I am moving to Itaweon. Should I get mace or not really? Can I buy that in Korea? Am I just paranoid?

I was wondering about this too. I always carry mace with me; I know it probably is just a false sense of security but at least it gives me something.
Is mace/ pepper spray legal to carry in Korea? Can I pack it in my checked bag?

Are you referring to the guy who got in the accident near Arianna Brau? If you are, he wasn't drunk. The circumstances of that accident were extremely unfortunate. Giving the impression that he was drunk out of his mind and being irresponsible is wrong. In fact it is disgusting on your part to spread a rumour like that without actually knowing what happened.

What did happen? I've never heard about that accident.
