I'm moving back to the US pretty soon and was wondering what the fastest and/or safest way to get my desktop computer and monitor home would be. I've heard two conflicting opinions - some say I should just ship them, others say I should tag them as fragile and check them as luggage - but I was wondering if anyone had any firsthand experience.

If it helps, it's important that I get the computer home as quickly as possible, as I am one of the leaders of a high-end World of Warcraft guild (4/6 Sunwell, if anyone cares about that sort of thing) and need to get back up and running ASAP.

I often drag desktops around when I head off on vacation (I donate them to 3rd world schools).

I just stick it in a suitcase with some clothes around it and they have always arrived just fine. They are not as fragile as many people think and they travel just fine. Since they are not under power the worst that is likely to happen is the video card may come lose but the new cards have locks on them so even that is not probable.

If you are really concerned, put it in a computer box with the Styrofoam inserts - they ship them globally that way anyway... no problem.

The biggest problem is the weight. A full size desktop will run 10-12 kilos and you can add 3-4kilos more for a monitor.

IF you are going stateside, that is just about 1/3 your weight allowance. IF you are heading anywhere else, it will kill your 20 kilo baggage allowance.

Removing the power supply will save you a significant amount of weight and if you are able to dis-assemble and re-assemble it, leave the case and PS behind. Everything else will fit in a mainboard box and only weigh a couple of kilos. You can pick up a case and PS for about $40 when you get home.
