Well, I can see what brand of feminism you subscribe to. If you believe that women require certain sympathies that men don't, fine; however, expect to pay the consequences if that kind of thinking catches on. For instance, if you are inoperable 1/30 days I don't want you to be the fighter pilot defending my country. I don't want you to be the astronaut that costs a billion dollars to put into space. I don't want you to be the head of a diplomatic mission that might have to engage in critical negotiations on one particular day, etc.

In any event, this 'one day off' is another thing that exists in lip service only in Korea. With all the exam days in Korean schools I don't really see how whoever thought it up could have expected it to work. As for me, I rather like the grit your teeth and bear it attitude that Koreans have about work. I almost never have to worry about problems arising from my coworkers being away, and in fact my coworkers have missed more time from deaths in the family than from sickness. That says something about a country and its priorities. Contrast this to Canada where the day before or after a long weekend you can count on 20%+ of staff being 'sick'. I do give a break to students who are suffering from cramps and will just let them put their heads down, but really, is sitting at home with cramps that much better than sitting at school with them? If you really wanted to help them you might want to explain to Korean parents and teachers why it's all right for their precious virgins to try the pill and see if that helps.

i'm not saying, nor would i ever say that women should take a day off just because they feel a little bloated or something.

what men here seem to be missing is the FACT, not the opinion, that many women have extremely painful periods.
not all women have painful periods, and thus, those women wouldn't need to take a day off of work.
but there is a large number of women who DO have painful periods.

your suggestion, and other men's suggestion of the pill doesn't grasp the whole picture.
not everyone has a positive reaction to the pill, meaning that taking the pill can cause other conditions to appear.
there are also people who don't want to be pumping their bodies full of medication.

it's not as if all the women in the US are on the pill.

based on your reply, you seem to refuse to acknowledge that one: there are females that are in serious pain, and two: a true knowledge of how women feel when they get a period.

i'm disappointed by the lack of understanding by men on this board.
allowing women the option to take a day off if they are too ill to work, isn't giving women some type of unfair advantage over men.

as a non-smoker, i don't think that it's fair that my collegues that smoke get to take smoke breaks.
why should others in the workplace have to accomodate smokers?
why can't i leave 30min or 1hr early, if the time they take smoking takes up that much of the day?
isn't that fair?
i don't like it that men take half as much time to use the toilet as women, but unless i get a *beep*, i have to live with this fact of life.

I think the thing about grumpiness during the cycle is a myth. I've never known my wife to have a change in mood because of it. I've never known anyone else to do so either.
She feels very ill at that time, yet it doesn't change her into a nag or anything.

I think that everyone should be entitled to some sick days per year for any reason - as NZ school teachers are. In fact, their sick leave accumulates.
Aigu, the sooner I get back there the better.

I agree with that last sentence. The issue is about equality.

I think we should be a little more human. I mean it wouldn't kill us to allow women to have a day off each month due to menstruation, would it?

It's not about weakness, it's just about acknowledging differences in individuals. You don't expect the stupid kid to do maths and you don't leave the fat kid with a pie, do you?

Maybe men (or the ones who don't complain about women having a day off) could then be allowed a day off per month for internet porn, or when you really can't be bothered coming in, or save it up for the end of the year. 2 weeks extra vacation.

I agree, which is why I think ANYONE should get maternity leave or the equivalent time off. If I want 12 weeks off to go travel, I should get it, just like my one-night stand knocked-up coworker got 12 weeks off and a job when she came back.

Trust me, I know very well that PMT puts some women in tremendous pain and there's not much they can do about it. I also know that in Korea all the BS of people using 'sick' days as holidays doesn't exist, and I rather like that. Of course women in too much pain to work should be given a break, but if that's the case there are staff lounges (and a sick room for students) where they can wait it out.

My ex-wife would literally come at me with carving knives in both hands when I had done nothing wrong. Shocked She blamed it on PMS.

Sometime back, a boy student missed classes and I asked him why. He grabbed the dictionary and looked up menstruation. I said, "you twit, boys don't menstruate." Then he revealed that he'd swallowed a persimmon seed on a dare. You know the rest.

There's a big room in my school with a bed, mirror, sink and curtains... only women allowed. It's for when we're feeling "under the weather" to sleep at work.

I'm guessing that also includes cramps... except that I'm fairly certain that the weather has yet to cause menstration cramps.
