With stocks of rice around the world the lowest in decades, perhaps it seems insensitive to talk about which country produces the most flavorful rice?

According to a newspaper article on the AP wire today, most Japanese refuse to eat imported rice. Same holds true for most Koreans. The Japanese begrudgingly import a certain amount of rice because of trade obligations, then either use it in cheap processed foods or store it until it becomes cattle fodder.

Aside from the arrogance of Japanese and Korean consumers who insist they've got the best rice without even bothering to taste imported varieties, who should have the bragging rights in your opinion?

I've had white rice from a large number of countries and my top three are as follows:

1. Hands down, Thai long grain jasmine rice takes the honors for me.

2. Next, without a doubt, is Chinese rice from DongBei (the cooler climes of the northeast).

3. Southern India grows a variety of white rice that is quite appealing.


As for Korean and Japanese rice, I dislike both immensely. Rice from Guangdong in southern China is almost as bad.

What's your take on this staple?

Basmati is my rice of choice... only thing I ever use Korean rice for is making rissoto.

Rice is basically filler and is supposed to be covered with a bit of meat, some veggies and a good sauce of some kind--so who can taste it? Choosing sticky rice or not makes sense for different dishes, though.

Anyone who eats plain rice is suffering from a serious lack of imagination.

Some rice taste good without being covered in anything.

Yep.

Take your basic potatoes, bread and rice and stuff 'em up your ass. They all taste, on their own, like diet paper.

Mix them up with something and they're okay.

Most Thai rice is horrible, horrible stuff. Sure there's the primo Jasmine variety which can be pretty good, but the standard fare is barely fit for livestock feed. The stuff they use in bkk street food is bad enough to make old men cry. I simply won't eat it, even on an empty stomach.

Japanese rice is quite good actually, nice aroma and it's just the right consistency for me. Korean is ok too. I don't like rice that dries your mouth out like cheap basmati or jasmine.

In terms of health though, all white rice is pretty much devoid of nutrients.

a good western hippie brown rice is the only rice worth busting a nut over.

if you're eating white rice you may as well be eating chocolate bars.

I used to belong to the school of "it's just rice, wtf?", and it took my girlfriend a lot of time to convince me, but yes, white rice can be considered a dish on it's own, and it does have different tastes. How it's cooked is extremely important, so the odds are most people have never tasted it properly made.

I used to love thai jasmine rice best, but a few weeks in a rural japanese home changed my mind sure enough.

Well at least everyone on this thread seems to agree that korean rice is nothing special.

Here in Costa Rica rice and beans holds the same prominence as kimchi does in Korea.

The best country for flavorful rice?�Right here.
