I just don't see it as something worth kicking up a fuss about, what's that phrase we use back home "Manners cost nothing"? Would you walk into someone's apartment with your shoes on because you're an american and you can walk where the hell you like wearing whatever the hell you like? Course not.
You do have to draw the line with this respect for elders thing in some situations- I've had situations where something's comes up at work, I'll investigate, explain the problem and the solution, show the evidence of what I'm talking about and some senior (but non technical) guy will turn round and say:
"No, I don't think that's the problem"
A good korean might have to listen and pay some lip service to whatever this guy's idea is, but personally I just say. "OK that's nice, but I'm telling you, that IS the problem". |

Indeed. Suppose a Korean went to the USA and said "I expect to be treated as a Korean, so women will kindly refrain from smoking in my presence". What would happen? He'd have his sorry a$$ laughed back to the old country. And the same conformity obligations apply to Americans(or anyone else) residing in Korea. |

To tell you the truth, and they wouldn't think of this, I feel a little embarrassed and awkward when I bow to the old woman everyday because I can't follow it up with anything. And it never tires the other teachers to see me bow and say "anyong hashimnikka?" They laugh every single time. I really want to bow and then have a conversation. I would never try to speak Korean to her as most of my Korean I learned in the friendship "banmal" form. Anyway, my point is I'm not raising a fuss because I have to bow to her, I can respect that, but the one time I didn't, let it slide please.

My bow is basically a nod with a slight lean forward. It conveys basic respect and saves everybody the embarrassment of the mockery that I'd make of a proper bow. Standing up and clicking off a nod would likely keep them happy and wouldn't kill you.

1. Itaewon is a ghetto. It is a place where a certain part of the society in Korea segregates otself from another part. That is one of the definitions of the word. Apgujeong is ALSO a ghetto. You seriously lack a basic grasp of the English language man. Itaewon is a sort of ethnic ghetto, because most of the people there are of a different ethnicity. Everything caters to the drunks who congragate there and most are foreign drunks. Such as you for example. Apgujeong is a financial or class oriented ghetto. I told you to look it up.
