Looks like a new soft-mod (i.e. you don't have to take it apart and insert a chip) has some good potential. Check the comments. However, I'm not too sure if this means using backups will be enabled. Seems like it, though.

Can't wait to be back in Canada next March to try some soft modding on my Wii. Before I left for Korea, I got X Box Media Center running on my x box!
