DES MOINES (AP) A Des Moines pizza delivery driver says he has been fired after shooting an armed man who allegedly tried to rob him during a delivery.
James William Spiers III was suspended from his job at Pizza Hut after the incident March 28. The company says Spiers violated company policy by carrying a gun on the job.

Spiers said Friday that Pizza Hut now has asked for his resignation but will pay at least two months of pay and counseling.

Chris Fuller, a Pizza Hut spokesman, says the company is also trying to help Spiers find other work.

Spiers says he does not regret using force against 19-year-old Kenneth Jimmerson, who is accused of holding a gun to Spiers head during a delivery at a Des Moines apartment. Spiers says his life was in danger and there was no way out.

Spiers fired multiple shots at Jimmerson, who was arrested after he called for help. He suffered at least three gunshot wounds and was charged with first-degree robbery. His fiance, 18-year-old Melanie Stout, is charged with conspiracy for allegedly calling in the pizza order.

Spiers says its the first time in 10 years of delivering pizzas that he has been robbed.

The guy says he's never been robbed before but suddenly decides to start packin' heat to the job? What was he planning to use his gun for? Shooting stop signs?

It looks like Pizza Hut made a wise decision to fire him.

After ten years of delivering pizzas maybe it's time for a career change, but why shouldn't he be allowed to protect himself?

Another example of America going downhill and Americans getting stupider. Gotta rob the delivery driver to 'get ahead.'

If there were more and more incidents of this type increasing and I were on the board, I'd see what kind of damage control that one could muster much less prohibiting product delivery. But we all know that wouldn't work.

If I'd been working for Pizza hut, I certainly wouldnt have risked my life to protect their money.

But really, the would be robber deserves some marks for abysmal stupidity. I thought the point of robbing someone was if you got away with it anonymously. He'd just given his name and address!?

There's something fishy in this story and I don't think it's the anchovies. How did the delivery guy end up with a gun held to his head by someone who'd given his address to Pizza Hut?

You haven't heard of there being dumb criminals in the United States like the fellow who fell asleep in a place that he robbed? Then, there was a guy who partially ate a candy bar, and people got DNA from it. How intelligent is to rob a 7/11? They don't keep a lot of cash on hand.
I think it is bad that this guy was fired. So, Pizza Hut, thinks he should have been killed and given the Pizza Cross as a Pizza Hut martyr?

Violent crime rate in America continues steep decline
WASHINGTON The number of people who were victims of all violent crimes except murder fell by 9% in 2001, sending the crime rate to its lowest level since it was first tracked in 1973, the government reported Sunday. The decline was due primarily to a record low number of reported assaults, the most common form of violent crime.

Lowest since 1973. That's quite the downhill roll.
